Before you grab that deli sandwich or dig into a slice of bacon, take a moment to read this. There’s been another recall alert, and it’s affecting our meats. On April 29, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall of nearly 19,000 pounds of sausage, sliced meats, and poultry products from Smith Packing, LLC. The recall was issued due to sodium nitrite levels exceeding the regulatory limit, according to the FSIS.

The issue came to light after Smith Packing received consumer complaints about an unusual smell and taste in the products. Upon investigation, the company found that the sodium nitrite levels were indeed too high and notified the FSIS. As of today, no adverse reactions have been reported.

The recall affects 16 products, including As-Salaam’s Beef Breakfast Sausage, Smith Packing’s Export Bologna, Honest John’s Retail HJ Polish, and more. You can find the full list of recalled items here. According to the FSIS, the impacted poultry products were shipped between February 19 and April 24, 2025, to retail and institutional locations in New York.

The FSIS also notes that the recalled items should have the establishment numbers “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” next to their USDA inspection mark.

“In coordination with the USDA, Smith agreed to a recall covering about 18,000 pounds of meat products labeled as Honest John’s, As-Salam and Beefland that may have been affected,” Joe Schaeffer, the director of marketing at Palmer Foods (the primary distributor of the recalled meats) told TODAY in a statement. “Approximately 90% of that product never left the warehouse, and approximately 34 customers were identified who received potentially inedible meats. Palmer is working with those customers to recover and destroy any potentially affected product.”

If you have purchased any of these items, please throw them away or return them to the store for a refund. We all love a good pastrami or deli sandwich, but nothing is worth getting sick over some bad meat.
