An estimated ten people have been killed in a mass shooting at an adult education center in western Sweden, according to local police. The country’s prime minister has described the shooting as the “worst attack” in its history.
The shooting reportedly occurred in the city of Orebro at 12:33 pm local time (11:33 GMT). Police initially reported that at least five people had been shot, but the casualty count later increased.
A police spokesperson told a press conference that an investigation has been launched into attempted murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offenses.

“It’s still too early to provide further details about the perpetrator,” local police chief Roberto Eid Forest said during the briefing, as quoted by The Guardian. “The operation is ongoing, and more information will undoubtedly emerge,” he added.
The regional authorities have confirmed that the number of people hospitalized has risen to six. Among them, five sustained gunshot wounds, with four undergoing surgery, including one in critical condition.
None of those admitted to the hospital are children, according to the report.
According to reports, police believe that the perpetrator is among the injured or deceased. Authorities reportedly said that the gunman acted alone and had no prior criminal record or known links to law enforcement.
Local broadcaster SVT reported, citing sources, that the suspected shooter was a man estimated to be around 35 years old.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the attack as a “terrible act of violence,” posting on X that “being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience.”
