Mountain Lion Kills Female Hiker in Colorado: First Fatal Attack Since 1999, Officials Confirm

A female hiker was killed by a mountain lion on a Colorado trail — the first fatal attack in the state since 1999 — prompting authorities to euthanize two of the animals and close the trail as safety concerns mount.

The incident occurred on Thursday along the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County, Colorado, according to state officials. The victim’s identity has not been released, but the attack marks a rare and deeply unsettling milestone: the first fatal mountain lion encounter in Colorado since 1999, as confirmed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Witnesses reported that a group of hikers encountered the mountain lion near the body of the victim and threw rocks to scare it away, causing the animal to flee. CPW confirmed that two mountain lions in the area were euthanized, as per state policy requiring the removal of any wildlife that attacks humans. Authorities are still searching for a third mountain lion potentially involved in the attack, according to CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose.

Mountain lions — also known as cougars, pumas, panthers, or catamounts — are more visible in winter as they follow deer and elk to lower elevations. CPW advises hikers to make noise to scare them away, hold objects overhead to appear larger, and slowly back away. Pets should be kept on-leash and never interacted with wildlife.

Local resident Kellie Mahoney, who owns a cabin near the site, told ABC News she had previously observed a family of four mountain lions in the area. “I couldn’t believe it. When I saw the one big cat and then all of a sudden all you see are eyeballs coming down off the mountain and there were the four of them together, which I’ve never seen before,” she said.

The trails remain closed, as confirmed by the U.S. Forest Service. The Estes Park Police Department issued a statement on social media offering condolences to the victim’s family: “The Town of Estes Park is deeply saddened by the tragic news of a suspected fatal mountain lion attack that occurred. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We offer our sincere condolences to all those grieving this heartbreaking loss.”

Colorado is home to an estimated 3,800 to 4,400 mountain lions, according to CPW. While attacks on humans are rare — with only 14 recorded fatalities in the state since 1999 — this incident has reignited public concern and prompted renewed interest in safety protocols for hikers.

Mountain lion encounters are often misunderstood. While they typically avoid humans, they may become aggressive if they feel threatened, cornered, or if their cubs are nearby. The presence of multiple animals in the area — as Mahoney described — suggests a larger-than-usual concentration, which may be linked to environmental factors or seasonal migration patterns.

For hikers, this event serves as a sobering reminder: even in scenic, remote areas, wildlife can be unpredictable. Preparedness — including carrying bear spray, staying in groups, and avoiding hiking alone — is critical. The incident also underscores the importance of reporting any wildlife sightings to local authorities, who can help assess potential risks and prevent future incidents.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and to report any sightings of mountain lions. The safety of hikers remains the top priority, and the closure of the trail is a necessary step to prevent further tragedies.

For those seeking more information on mountain lion behavior and safety guidelines, the official CPW resource provides detailed recommendations and educational materials. The agency’s website is the most authoritative source for up-to-date information on wildlife in Colorado.
