NEED TO KNOW

  • A mother of the bride chose to wear minimal makeup to her daughter’s wedding

  • The mother, 51, explained that the choice stemmed from having reactions to makeup after going through menopause

  • The daughter criticized her mother’s appearance and asked her if she “chose” to “look terrible” on her wedding day

One mother of the bride was happy to support her daughter’s marriage and thought that the wedding went well, but she was later confronted by her daughter for how she chose to wear her makeup — or lack thereof — at the nuptials.

A 51-year-old mother of the bride revealed that her daughter confronted her after returning from her honeymoon and had an issue with her decision to not wear heavier makeup for the wedding.

“My daughter (25f) got married to the love of her life (25m). As I (51f) have gotten older, I have developed a hatred for full-face makeup,” she explained on Reddit. “Menopause feels like a 2nd puberty sometimes as every time I wear full-face makeup, my face breaks out in pimples. Even when it’s done by a professional.”

To compromise, the mother of the bride “wore lipstick, eyeliner, and fake eyelashes,” she wrote. “I was in a nice dress and wearing full jewelry. My hair was done.” She also noted that her daughter did not offer to pay for a professional to do her makeup for the wedding.

“After returning from her honeymoon, my daughter criticized my appearance at her wedding. She asked if I choose to ‘look terrible’ because I had a problem with their union,” she continued. “I tried to explain that I have no problem with their union and my daughter kept asking why did I disrespect her wedding by showing like that.”

The mother of the bride concluded her post by asking Reddit users if she was the “a——” for wanting to be comfortable in less makeup on her daughter’s wedding day.

Redditors in the comments section unanimously agreed that the mother of the bride was not in the wrong for wanting to be comfortable and suggested that the bride was being a “bridezilla” about her appearance.

“Unfortunately, it sounds like your daughter is suffering from bridezilla syndrome,” one user wrote in the comments. “A lot of women have fantasized about their perfect day ever since they were little girls, so they become extremely meticulous over the minutia. So much so, that they’re willing to be rude, entitled, and overall a s—– person to others.”

A second user added, “your daughter, if this is real, is the worst. I would eat a bowl of spiderwebs before I would say that to my Mom! It is an awful thing to say and she has no sense of reality yet. Wait until someone she loves cannot be at an event for her forever and then tell me how much that make up mattered. She has no perspective. NTA.”

When asked “does she often treat you like that?” the mother of the bride noted that her daughter “doesn’t usually,” and agreed when another user suggested that “maybe something else is bothering her and she’s lashing out at you.” She also added that it was “possible” that that was the case.

Further down in the comments section, a user wrote, “your daughter is being ridiculous. You don’t get to micromanage other people’s faces on your wedding day.”

The Reddit user suggested that the mother of the bride have a candid conversation with the daughter, but also questioned the daughter’s maturity level to be in a marriage, considering how preoccupied she is with another person’s makeup choices.

“I would straight up tell her you felt you did the best you could with the skin you were born in and it’s not up for further discussion,” the user added. “Photographers can do light editing too. She sounds too immature to be married frankly, hope it works out.”
