More Americans say Trump overstepping his power than judges: Survey

More Americans said President Trump is overstepping his presidential power to achieve his goals compared to judges who have ruled against his administration’s actions, according to a survey released Friday.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that 54 percent of U.S. adults surveyed said they think the president has too much power in the U.S. government. About 35 percent of respondents argued Trump has about the right amount of power, while 9 percent said he has too little.

When asked about the power of federal judges, Americans were more evenly split. About a third, 32 percent, said federal judges have too much power, while 43 percent argued the jurists have the right amount. Some 23 percent said they have too little power, the survey showed.

Most Republicans surveyed disagreed, with 52 percent saying that federal justices have too much institutional power. Nearly 4 in 10 (38 percent) said they think the judges have the right amount of power, while 9 percent argued they have too little.

After just more than 100 days in office, Trump has penned dozens of executive orders, exerted pressure on law firms to negotiate favorable agreements, and acted on his promise to secure the southern border and begin deporting migrants.

Courts have pushed back on Trump and his administration’s actions, with the president calling on those who have ruled against him to be impeached.

Most Americans, 70 percent, were opposed to impeaching judges who have ruled against Trump when it comes their decisions regarding agency closures and spending cuts, an early April Marquette University Law School poll found.

The Friday survey found that 57 percent of Americans said they think Trump has gone too far in using his presidential powers to achieve his goals. About 32 percent said the president has used the right amount of power while 10 percent argued the commander in chief has not gone far enough.

Nearly all Democrats in the survey, 86 percent, said Trump has gone too far, while most of the GOP respondents, 62 percent, said the president has used the right amount of power, according to the survey.

The poll was conducted April 17-21 among 1,260 U.S. adults. The margin of error was 3.9 percentage points.
