More Americans say Trump going too far on deportations: Poll

A growing number of Americans say President Trump has gone too far in his efforts to deport migrants living in the U.S. illegally, according to the latest CNN poll.

A slim majority, 52 percent, said in the mid-April poll that the president has “gone too far” with deportations, up from 45 percent in February.

One-third of respondents say Trump’s approach has “been about right,” down six points from 39 percent in February; and just 14 percent say Trump has “not gone far enough,” a two-point drop from the February poll.

The share of Americans who say Trump has gone too far with deportations has increased across virtually all sub-groups since February — though a significant partisan split remains.

Today, 85 percent of Democrats say Trump has gone too far — up 9 points from February. The share of liberals who say he’s gone too far remains unchanged at 85 percent.

A majority of independents and ideological moderates — 56 percent and 57 percent, respectively — now say Trump has gone too far. That represents an 8-point jump among independents and a 10-point jump among moderates.

In Trump’s own party, the share who say he’s gone too far ticked up two points, to 14 percent today — while 23 percent of conservatives say he’s gone too far, up from 19 percent in February.

Trump, in his second term, has embarked on an ambitious immigration agenda, pledging to finish the construction of his border wall to deport the most people the country has ever seen. Border encounters have dropped significantly, with March representing the lowest number on record.

The president has also taken some controversial steps that have been met with some resistance by federal courts and even some of his supporters.

Since taking office, Trump’s administration has sent more than 200 Venezuelan and Salvadoran men to a mega prison in El Salvador, where it argues they are unreachable by U.S. officials or the courts. The administration has also stripped more than 1,700 student visas since taking office, with many of the most high-profile cases targeting those who have protested on behalf of Palestinians.

The CNN survey was conducted April 17-24, 2025, and included 1,678 respondents. The margin of sampling error is 2.9 percentage points.
