A Bronx mother, Raiza Contreras, whose son Dylan was detained by ICE, will attend President Trump’s State of the Union address as a guest of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, highlighting the human impact of the administration’s immigration policies.
Raiza Contreras, a 41-year-old mother from the Bronx, will attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address as a guest of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, USA TODAY has exclusively learned. Contreras’ son, Dylan, 21, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in May while attending a routine immigration court hearing.
Contreras, who immigrated from Venezuela, is fighting for her son’s release and hopes that attending the State of the Union will bring attention to his case and the plight of other migrant families. “It’s an opportunity to at least bring attention to the case and many other injustices happening,” Contreras said in an interview.
Dylan, who has no criminal history, entered the country through a Biden-era program in 2024 and was granted humanitarian parole. He was detained by ICE after attending a routine immigration court hearing, where his case was dismissed. Dylan’s lawyers have appealed his case to the Board of Immigration Appeals and have a pending habeas petition in federal court to allow him a bond hearing for his release.
Contreras’ story highlights the human impact of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which have been criticized for their aggressive approach to enforcement. Schumer, who invited Contreras to the State of the Union, said, “No mother should have to go through what Raiza is experiencing right now – being unjustly separated from her son.”
