Ringwald and her husband Panio Gianopoulos are also parents to daughter Mathilda, 21. Back in April 2024, The Breakfast Club star got candid about the beginning of her motherhood journey.
In an interview with The Times, the actress revealed the story behind conceiving Mathilda. “I believe that Mathilda was conceived in the dressing room at Studio 54 right at the end of my run playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret in 2003,” Ringwald shared. “It’s so Mathilda to be conceived in such an iconic place.”
“I always knew I wanted to have children but it took me a while — I was 36 when she was born. At that age, the biological clock is a real thing, and it had kind of become deafening,” she added. “All I could think about was: must have kids.”
On July 10, 2009, the actress welcomed her twins nearly a month early. While going from having one child at home to three was “a bit more challenging” at first, Ringwald, who welcomed her twins at age 41, credited her husband and “careful planning” for making balancing motherhood with her career possible.
“It really helps to have a very supportive partner and a lot of flexibility,” she told PEOPLE in September 2010.

The star opened up to the outlet about some of the struggles that come with being a mom.
“The hardest thing about motherhood was realizing that my time was not my own,” she said. “As an actress, I’ve traveled a lot and learnt to live with instability, but that’s not great for kids.”
Ringwald added, “That’s something I am always looking to improve on and luckily I have a husband who is a planner and is very stable.”
