MLS will play a 2027 ‘sprint season’ before resetting its calendar for the global game

MLS’s abrupt shift to a 14-game “sprint season” in 2027 is a calculated gamble to sync with the global soccer calendar, but it risks alienating fans and disrupting team strategies in the short term.

Major League Soccer will play a shortened 14-game regular season in early 2027 before switching to a summer-to-spring schedule that better aligns with the global soccer calendar, the league announced Thursday according to the Associated Press.

The so-called “sprint season” will run from February to May 2027, with each of the league’s 30 teams playing 14 games—seven at home and seven on the road—solely against conference opponents. The top eight teams from each conference will advance to a single-elimination MLS Cup playoffs, culminating in a championship game between the Eastern and Western Conference winners. Performance in this sprint season will also determine continental qualification:

  • Five teams will qualify for the 2028 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
  • Eighteen teams (nine from each conference) will qualify for the 2028 Leagues Cup.

Following this abbreviated campaign, MLS will launch a 2027–28 season that kicks off in July 2027, with playoffs and the MLS Cup final scheduled for May 2028 as part of the broader calendar reset.

The move to a summer-to-spring schedule is designed to eliminate conflicts with the European transfer window and free players for summer international tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and Copa América. The current MLS season, which began in February 2026, will conclude with the MLS Cup final in December. Under the new structure, the league will observe an extended winter break, with only a handful of games in early December and none in January before resuming in February or March.

MLS owners approved the switch last year. Commissioner Don Garber framed the change as essential for the league’s global ambitions: “This is an opportunity for us to eliminate the competition that we’ve had for our playoffs as they exist today in a very crowded time of the year,” Garber said. “It allows us to be aligned with the international transfer windows, which we think is incredibly important. It gives us a wide variety of opportunities that will expand our ability to be on this path to be one of the top and leading leagues in the world.”

The sprint season represents a bold interim solution. By condensing the 2027 campaign into a 14-game sprint, MLS acknowledges the logistical challenges of an immediate calendar switch. This format prioritizes high-stakes conference play and ensures that a majority of teams (60%) still qualify for the Leagues Cup, maintaining engagement while the league transitions. However, the shortened season will compress the schedule, potentially increasing the impact of injuries and testing squad depth for all 30 clubs.

For fans, the most visible change will be the MLS Cup moving to May. The championship will no longer coincide with the NFL season or the holiday period, instead landing in a quieter sports calendar. This could boost viewership but also means a longer wait for the marquee event after the season starts. The extended winter break—with no January games—may also test fan engagement during what has traditionally been a dormant period for the league.

Strategically, the alignment with the global transfer window is a game-changer. Clubs can now buy and sell players during the same window as European powerhouses, making MLS a more attractive destination for talent acquisition and sales. The timing also frees key players for national team duty in the summer, reducing the conflicts that have sometimes led to federation-league tensions.

This calendar reset is the most significant structural shift in MLS since its inception. While the sprint season is a one-off adjustment, the permanent switch to a summer-to-spring model signals MLS’s intent to compete on a global stage. The league is betting that long-term gains in player mobility, international relevance, and competitive alignment will outweigh the short-term disruption of a 14-game season and a winter hiatus.
