Mississippi State Coach Jeff Lebby Urges Optimism for QB Kamario Taylor After Duke’s Mayo Bowl Injury

Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby insists freshman QB Kamario Taylor escaped serious injury after a brutal tackle in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl — despite being carted off the field. His mom confirmed it was just an ankle, not a torn ligament or broken bone.

The final moments of Mississippi State’s 43-29 loss to Wake Forest in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl turned into a scene straight out of a horror movie — but with a happy ending. Freshman quarterback Kamario Taylor was tackled awkwardly while scrambling for extra yardage near midfield, writhing in pain as teammates gathered around him on one knee. A cart rolled onto the field to take him to the locker room, raising immediate concerns among fans and analysts alike.

But Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby quickly reassured everyone that initial reports were positive. “We’ll continue to evaluate,” he said after the game, adding, “I feel good about getting in the locker room, being able to talk to our medical staff, and being able to see Kamario again.” He declined to specify which body part was affected or whether any bones were broken or ligaments torn — but emphasized that Taylor was conscious, talking, and cooperative during the evaluation process.

Taylor’s mother, LaQuandra Conner, posted directly to social media shortly after the game, sharing a photo of herself and her son and writing, “thanks everyone for the prayers it was his ankle but NOTHING is torn or broken GOD had MY BABY covered and for that I say THANK YOU LORD.” The message confirmed what the coaching staff hinted at — this was a non-serious injury, likely a sprain or contusion.

Though Taylor didn’t play much beyond halftime due to the injury, his performance before leaving the field showcased promise. In his second career start for the Bulldogs (5-8), Taylor completed 13 of 22 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 63 yards and another score — including a spectacular dive over the goal line from a shotgun snap.

“A ton of toughness and there’s a ton of things to be excited about,” Lebby said afterward. “… For what he was able to get out of this bowl experience with 15 extra practices, the ability to go play in another game against a really good opponent, to me that is huge for us as we’re continuing to build this thing.”

This wasn’t Taylor’s first taste of big-game pressure. He made his debut in a loss to No. 6 Ole Miss, where he showed flashes of poise under center. But this bowl appearance — against a ranked Wake Forest team — offered invaluable experience. Even if he couldn’t finish the game, the exposure could accelerate his development as Mississippi State looks toward next season’s rebuild.

While many fans feared the worst after seeing Taylor carted off, the fact that he’s already been cleared by medical staff suggests the injury won’t derail his future. In fact, the incident might serve as a rallying point — reminding fans and recruits alike that Taylor possesses resilience and grit, traits essential for a young quarterback navigating a demanding SEC program.

Lebby’s optimism isn’t just bravado — it’s grounded in what Taylor accomplished before going down. Despite trailing by 14 points with under three minutes remaining, Taylor kept the offense alive long enough to give the Bulldogs a chance to rally. That kind of mental toughness will be critical moving forward.

What happens next? If Taylor can return to practice without setbacks, his timeline for recovery could allow him to contribute early in spring drills — potentially giving him a leg up on competition for starting duties next season. If rehab takes longer than expected, he’ll still have valuable time to work on his mechanics and decision-making in offseason programs.

Regardless of how long he misses, Taylor’s presence — both physically and mentally — remains central to Mississippi State’s rebuilding efforts. With Lebby’s support and the family’s faith in his recovery, there’s reason to believe this setback won’t define Taylor’s legacy — only enhance it.

For now, the focus shifts back to the Bulldogs’ offseason plans — and how they’ll leverage Taylor’s growth as a foundation for future success. His performance in this bowl game, even if abbreviated, proved he belongs in the spotlight — and that’s exactly what Mississippi State needs right now.
