Mindy Kaling is giving a glimpse into B.J. Novak’s connection with her children as she celebrates his birthday.

On Thursday, July 31, The Sex Lives of College Girls creator, 46, shared her three favorite snaps of her longtime friend and fellow The Office alum to commemorate his 46th birthday. In one adorable snap, Kaling showed Novak pouring a cup of coffee, adorning light blue Crocs as her older daughter, Katherine, 7, sat on the counter next to him.

While her daughter’s face was covered by Novak’s arm, the picture showed a sweet glance of the godfather of three in action.

Kaling is a proud mom to three children, son Spencer Avu, 4, and daughters Anne, 17 months, and Katherine. The actress has been vocal about how “important and integral” Novak is to her family and at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Novak spoke on her behalf, calling her an “incredible mother of three.”

“Mindy respects and understands [fame] in a very intuitive way because in addition to being a brilliant and wildly successful showrunner, an incredible mother of three, a deep and caring daughter and friend and mentor to so many,” he shared.

“You’d be on the walk of talent if they had one,” he added. “You’d be on the walk of friendship. You’d be on the walk of compassionate parenthood, but let’s face it, all of these would be terrible field trips, so here you are instead, very deservedly, a person who means so much to so many on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

On Sunday, July 13, the Running Point creator shared snaps from her fun movie night at home with Novak, her son Spencer and daughter Katherine. After enjoying their dinner, they watched the 1987 classic film The Princess Bride, which Kaling described as a “perfect movie.”

“After dinner, we showed The Princess Bride to Kit and Spencer for the first time (@picsschmicks rec!) and it was even better than when I saw it in 1987,” she wrote. “I hate when people say the phrase ‘it’s a perfect movie’ but here I am saying it’s a perfect movie.”

“Kit was obsessed with Inigo Montoya’s vengeance plot (shocking) and Spencer loved the Fire Swamp and the R.O.U.S.s. As a kid I was obsessed with @caryelwes and now I’m kind of a @mandypatinkin gal! Aging!” she added.

While she may keep her children out of the public eye, the doting mom can’t help but talk about her children in interviews. In an interview with WSJ. Magazine in February 2024, the Never Have I Ever creator opened up about how motherhood has changed her perspective on life.

“It’s really rewarding, being a mom and spending time with these two people who look like me,” Kaling shared with the outlet. “I love them, and they’re so funny. In terms of my career, I’m a single mom, I’m the breadwinner in the house.”

“So there’s a lot of panic that comes with that, the buck stops with me, I have to earn money for them,” she added. “Having kids is everything — wanting to be a good role model and wanting to produce content that doesn’t embarrass them and makes them proud is another layer to my life and a complication that I welcome.”
