Miley Cyrus is opening up about a “pretty traumatic” health scare she suffered mid-concert a few years back.
Though she didn’t know it at the time, during her Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party special on NBC in 2023, the “End of the World” songstress was dealing with a ruptured ovarian cyst. She powered through the pain to co-host with her godmother, Dolly Parton, and duet with guest performers like Sia and Paris Hilton.
The 32-year-old detailed the on-stage “medical emergency” during an appearance on Apple Music 1’s The Zane Lowe Interview Series on Wednesday, May 21, admitting that as it was happening, she “didn’t know exactly what was going on.”
“It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway,” she admitted. “But it was really, really hard on me.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, ovarian cysts—typically fluid-filled sacs—are common and usually harmless, causing little to no discomfort. However, sometimes they grow too large or burst, which can cause sudden, severe pain in the abdomen and/or pelvis, fever, vomiting, or even signs of shock.
Cyrus’ experience was so bad that she even thought about retiring, but SNL’sLorne Michaels—who executive produced the holiday special where it all went down—was able to talk her down.
“I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that now has stuck with me,” she revealed. “He goes, ‘Six months—everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild.'”
He told the singer that “everyone does this,” calling back to an unknown number of artists who’ve told him the same thing over the years, and she eventually came to the realization that music “will quit me before I ever quit it” and got back to it, recording her new album Something Beautiful, dropping later this month.
