Miley Cyrus Celebrates ‘Identity and Uniqueness’ in Custom Alaïa on the 2025 Met Gala Carpet

Miley Cyrus delivered something beautiful at the 2025 Met Gala.

The singer, 32, embraced the theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” on Monday, May 5, in a daring ensemble that was easily in the top ranking for best interpretation of the “Tailored for You” dress code.

Cyrus wore custom Alaïa by Pieter Mulier and jewelry by Cartier, including a stacked three-ring necklace. The outfit is a mixture of textures, with a revealing leather crop top and a tailored skirt that pleats out at the bottom.

On the Vogue event’s red carpet, the singer said the theme means “celebrating identity and uniqueness” and “challenging what’s expected of you and going beyond.”

“Really being proud of yourself and how you show up,” Cyrus continued. “I think of these gowns as, like, armor. It’s a representation of power and strength. That’s how I feel about fashion. So I love seeing everyone’s way that they’re showing up and presenting that power.”

Last October, Vogue announced Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour would be co-chairs for this year’s Met Gala, alongside LeBron James as honorary chair. The event, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which is the theme for the gala.

Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton shared that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”

The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.

The Met Gala’s dress code — which is slightly different from the theme — is “Tailored for You.” It is a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. The gala also has a star-studded host committee: Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, as well as Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese and Usher.

When it comes to the Met Gala, Cyrus is a chameleon and every time she’s attended fashion’s biggest night, she’s delivered one showstopping moment after the next.

In 2019, she honored the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme in a Saint Laurent green-and-black sequin striped minidress that she paired with sheer Swiss dot patterned leggings. Her hair was then styled in a down hairstyle with choppy baby bangs.

At the time, Cyrus attended with her then-husband, Liam Hemsworth, who wore an all-black look. The two announced their split in August 2019 after less than a year of marriage.

In 2018, the year of the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” exhibition, the singer stunned in a daring backless Stella McCartney mermaid gown with a plunging neckline, as well as jewelry by Gabriel NY and Sydney Evan.

When she attended in 2015, Cyrus pulled off a completely different aesthetic for the “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme, rocking a studded black Alexander Wang gown with side cutouts. This time, she rocked a slicked-back pixie cut dyed a silver hue.

For her Met Gala debut in 2013, months before she released her Bangerz album, the singer leaned into the “PUNK: From Chaos to Couture” theme in a sheer mesh gown, her short blonde hair in a spiky style. She added a pop of color to the look with a bold red lip.

Returning to the Met Gala is always rooted in Cyrus’ love for glamour. In a 2019 interview with Vogue at the event, she said: “My favorite time of the year is Met Ball. It’s like a reunion with all your friends and it starts feeling like family. I’m also a big Lookie-Loo so I love to watch and judge and vote on what my favorite thing that anyone’s worn.”

Her arrival at this year’s fête comes at a time in her sartorial career that is experimental but also classic with a bit of rock ‘n’ roll edge. Most recently she stepped out for the 2025 Oscars in a black Alexander McQueen halter gown and bleached brows. She’s also been rocking archival Bob Mackie to promote her new album Something Beautiful (out May 30).  “This era has a richness and depth that feels both modern and timeless. The looks reflect that same energy. For me, it was about translating the music through the styling into something visual and elevated,” her stylist Bradley Kenneth told Vogue.
