As the countdown to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics approaches its final 100 days, the excitement is palpable across northern Italy. These Games, set to be the most geographically spread-out in history, promise a spectacular showcase of winter sports across a diverse range of venues, from state-of-the-art new arenas in Milan to historic slopes in the Dolomites.

The decision to award the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics to Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo was announced on June 24, 2019, by the International Olympic Committee (Olympics.com). This momentous occasion set in motion a multi-regional effort, uniting the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige in a grand vision.

Scheduled from February 6th to the 22nd, 2026, the Games will feature 16 disciplines across 14 competition areas. The logistical challenge of connecting these diverse locations, spread over 400 kilometers between the two main clusters of Milan and Cortina, is immense. Yet, organizers are committed to making the most of existing infrastructure while also introducing new, sustainable facilities, all under the banner of the “Futura” logo, symbolizing a footprint left in the snow.

Milan: The Urban Heartbeat of the Games

Italy’s industrial powerhouse, Milan, will serve as a primary hub for the Games, hosting a mix of traditional and modern winter sports disciplines. The city’s preparations include significant renovations and the construction of new facilities, all while integrating with Milan’s robust public transport network.

Opening Ceremony and Olympic Villages

  • San Siro Stadium (Stadio Giuseppe Meazza): The iconic 80,000-seat football stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, will host the spectacular opening ceremony (Associated Press). This event will mark a bittersweet moment for fans, as the historic venue is slated for demolition and replacement after the Games (Associated Press).
  • Porta Romana Olympic Village: Situated in a prestigious area and served by metro line 3, this village will house athletes, undergoing significant renovation and development.

Competition Venues in Milan

  • Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena (Pala Italia Santa Giulia): This brand-new facility, designed to accommodate 16,000 spectators, is set to be Italy’s largest indoor arena. It will be the main venue for men’s hockey and all the hockey finals, including para ice hockey. Despite a tight timeline, organizers are confident in its completion, with test events scheduled for early January 2026.
  • Fiera Milano (Milano Ice Park): The vast Fiera Milano exhibition venue will be transformed into the Ice Park, utilizing temporary structures. This complex will host some ice hockey matches and all speed skating events. The Speed Skating Stadium was delivered in August 2025, with ice-laying commencing in October.
  • Mediolanum Forum (Forum di Milano): Located in Assago on the southwestern outskirts of Milan, this multipurpose facility, with a 12,500 capacity, will host figure skating and short track speed skating events. Renovated in 2017, it has a history of hosting major international competitions.

Cortina d’Ampezzo: The Queen of the Dolomites Returns

Often referred to as the “Queen of the Dolomites,” Cortina d’Ampezzo holds a special place in Olympic history, having previously hosted the Winter Games in 1956. This picturesque alpine resort will once again be a central stage for some of the most thrilling winter sports.

Cortina’s Historic and Reimagined Venues

  • Olympia delle Tofane (Tofane Alpine Skiing Center): This iconic course, a regular stop on the women’s World Cup circuit and host of the 2021 World Championships, will be the site for women’s Alpine skiing. The stunning Dolomites provide a breathtaking backdrop for this demanding discipline.
  • Curling Olympic Stadium (Stadio Olimpico del Ghiaccio): A direct legacy from the 1956 Games, this stadium will host curling and wheelchair curling events. Its historical significance is further enhanced by its appearance in the James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only.”
  • Cortina Sliding Center (‘e Monti’): After a significant 118 million euro reconstruction, the century-old sliding center is ready for bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events. Despite initial opposition from the IOC regarding the cost, the venue has reportedly “surpassed expectations,” having secured preliminary certification in March 2025 (Associated Press). The final facilities are scheduled for completion by November 5, 2025.

The Mountain Clusters: Action Across the Alps

Beyond the primary cities, several mountain locations will host key events, spreading the Olympic spirit and athletic prowess across the beautiful Italian Alps.

Valtellina: Lombardy’s Mountain Heart

  • Bormio (Stelvio Ski Center): Approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Milan, Bormio is home to the fearsome Stelvio course, a renowned fixture on the World Cup circuit. This venue will host men’s Alpine skiing. The Games will also see the Olympic debut of ski mountaineering here, a thrilling addition for mountain enthusiasts.
  • Livigno (Livigno Snow Park and Livigno Aerials and Moguls Park): An hour north of Bormio, Livigno is a vibrant resort town focusing on youth-centric sports. It will host all snowboard and freestyle skiing competitions, awarding 26 medals. Livigno proudly unveiled its Aerials and Moguls Park in December 2024, marking it as one of the first 2026 Olympic venues to be ready. Livigno will also host an Olympic Village.

  • Tesero Cross-Country Centre (Tesero cross-country skiing stadium): Less than 10 kilometers from Predazzo, Tesero will host cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, para cross-country skiing, and para biathlon. The stadium, opened in 1990, has a long tradition of hosting World Championships.
  • Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium (Trampolino ‘G Dal Ben ski jump): Surrounded by stunning Dolomite peaks, Predazzo will be the stage for ski jumping and Nordic combined events. This venue, which hosts the World Cup annually, can accommodate 20,000 spectators.

  • Anterselva Biathlon Arena (Südtirol Arena): This venue will host the entire biathlon competition. The Anterselva Biathlon Arena has a distinguished history, having hosted multiple World Championships since the 1970s and an annual World Cup race, making it a seasoned choice for the Games.

Beyond the competitive aspects, the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games are also a catalyst for regional development and inclusivity. Initiatives like the “Olympic Territories – Accessibility for All” project, promoted by the Lombardy region, aim to eliminate barriers in sports, entertainment, and nature access, ensuring that the Olympic legacy benefits everyone.

The anticipation for these Games extends beyond the sporting events, encompassing a vibrant calendar of cultural activities and local engagement efforts. From art exhibitions in Cortina to cycling races through the Dolomites, and night skiing events in Bormio, the regions are already immersing themselves in the Olympic spirit. The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are not just a sports competition; they are a celebration of Italian culture, breathtaking landscapes, and a commitment to a sustainable and accessible future.
