Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White are circling the lead roles for Aaron Sorkin’s sequel to the 2010 Oscar winner “The Social Network,” according to sources with knowledge of the project.

While no offers have been made, Sorkin has met with both Madison and White about the project. The film is still very much in the development stage and has yet to receive the green light from Sony.

Sony declined to comment on the casting.

Sorkin is set to write and direct the follow-up to David Fincher’s 2010 original. While that film followed the creation of the ubiquitous social media platform and the rise of its boy-genius founder Mark Zuckerberg, the sequel is based on “The Facebook Files” from Jeff Horwitz. Published by the Wall Street Journal in 2021, the series of articles exposed Facebook for its harmful effects on teens and its knowing proliferation of misinformation, which contributed to acts of political violence.

Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser serve as producers for the sequel.

The casting is buzzy as Madison is coming off her Oscar-winning turn in Sean Baker’s indie darling “Anora.” She’s next set to star alongside Kirsten Dunst in “Reptilia” and has been reported to be in talks for A24’s “The Masque of Death.” Similarly, White, best known for his work on FX’s culinary drama “The Bear,” for which he has won two consecutive Emmys, will portray The Boss in the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me from Nowhere,” out in theaters this fall. He’ll also play a key role in “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” voicing Rotta the Hutt.

Jesse Eisenberg led “The Social Network” as the Facebook mastermind, starring opposite Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer. Whether Eisenberg will reprise his role as Zuckerberg in the sequel is still unknown.

“The Social Network” garnered eight Academy Award nominations and took home honors for best adapted screenplay, best editing and best original score. The film grossed $226 million at the global box office.
