Mikaela Shiffrin and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde: A Couple’s Olympic Comeback Fueled by Shared Survival

In a story of resilience and shared trauma, Olympic skiing icons Mikaela Shiffrin and fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde reveal how they navigated separate, near-career-ending injuries together, turning a period of ‘survival mode’ into the foundation of their Olympic comeback.

The path to the Olympic Games is rarely a straight line. For the sport’s biggest power couple, Mikaela Shiffrin and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, the last two years have been a masterclass in navigating detours. In a series of exclusive interviews, the two-time Olympic gold medalist and her three-time Olympic medalist fiancé have opened up about the profound impact of their separate, brutal crashes and how their unique bond became the critical support system that pulled them both back to the peak of their sport.

Their parallel stories of recovery began in a whirlwind of tragedy. In January 2024, Kilde, a decorated Norwegian skier, suffered a brutal crash in Switzerland that left him with severe injuries. The initial prognosis suggested a few months of rehab, but complications from a significant shoulder infection and subsequent surgeries extended his recovery to nearly two years. His journey back to the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup circuit, which he officially rejoined in late 2025, was a grueling physical and mental battle.

Just months after Kilde’s accident, Shiffrin’s own world was turned upside down. During the Stifel Killington Cup in Vermont in November 2024, the American skiing icon sustained a life-threatening injury after a crash where she was “stabbed” by a sharp object, resulting in a puncture wound in her abdomen. The injury required surgery and left her in a state where even basic movements were agonizing.

For a couple who are used to globetrotting for competition, this period was a strange and painful new reality. Instead of being apart, they were together at home, but their shared space was filled with pain and immobility.

“We both have been in survival mode for the last year and a half,” Shiffrin recalled to PEOPLE exclusively in April 2025. “Total survival mode.” She described the physical toll of her injury vividly: “I didn’t want to be touched. It was painful to do everything. It was like coughing, sneezing and laughing hurt.”

This shared experience of physical trauma and emotional strain forged an unbreakable bond. Unlike any other, their relationship is built on a foundation of true empathy, as they are the only people who can truly understand the unique pressures and pains of elite skiing. This dynamic has become their greatest strength.

As Kilde began his comeback, Shiffrin’s role shifted from patient to supporter, offering him the kind of encouragement only a fellow champion could provide. She spoke to him after a particularly challenging race in Italy, where a jump on the course was the length of half a football field. Kilde, racing with only about 50% of his shoulder function, had a tough day but still managed to finish.

“At the end, I was like, ‘Wait, you’re more concerned right now because you are a second and a half off of the fastest time? You’re competing with guys who are at their very top level… And you’re a second and a half off… That’s the last thing you should be worried about,'” Shiffrin recounted, perfectly encapsulating the mindset of a champion who understands that recovery is a victory in itself.

This ability to relate about the highs and lows of the sport is what makes their partnership so unique. Shiffrin emphasized that their connection is about more than just romance; it’s about a shared understanding that helps them navigate the toughest moments. “I know that feeling,” she said. “It’s being able to relate to each other and help each other through those tough moments. He does that for me on a daily basis. It’s pretty special.”

Now, with the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina on the horizon, this couple’s journey is a powerful narrative of redemption. Both Shiffrin and Kilde are looking to make their Olympic return, not just as individual athletes, but as a unified team forged in the fire of adversity. Shiffrin aims to defend her medals for Team USA, while Kilde, a silver and bronze medalist from Beijing 2022, looks to add to his legacy.

They have transformed a period of survival into a story of shared strength. Their comeback is no longer just about physical recovery; it’s about proving that their bond, tested and strengthened by their darkest moments, is the ultimate competitive advantage as they prepare to take on the world’s stage once again.

For fans of the sport, their story is a compelling reminder of the human element behind the medals and the podiums. It’s a testament to love, resilience, and the power of having someone who not only cheers for you but understands every step of the climb back to the top. The 2026 Olympics will not just be a competition; it will be the culmination of a journey back from the brink, side by side.
