NEED TO KNOW

  • Mick Fleetwood is reflecting on 50 years of Fleetwood Mac

  • The band’s core group was fully formed in the mid-’70s when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie

  • Buckingham and Fleetwood reunited in the recording studio earlier this year

Mick Fleetwood is reminiscing about Fleetwood Mac’s magic.

In an Instagram video posted on Wednesday, July 16, the legendary band’s drummer sat outside listening to “Frozen Love,” nodding his head along to Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham harmonizing.

Fleetwood Mac was founded in 1967, but the core group of Fleetwood, 78, Nicks, 77, Buckingham, 75, John McVie and Christine McVie fully formed in the mid-’70s when Buckingham and Nicks joined.

They released Fleetwood Mac in July 1975, which features “Landslide,” “Say You Love Me” and “Rhiannon” among other classics. Fleetwood Mac’s history included feuds, breakups and reunions, and at times inspired their music.

“The marriage of Stevie and Lindsey, the marriage of coming into Fleetwood Mac when they did — it’s all in the song. It’s in the music,” Fleetwood said of the 1973 duet by Buckingham Nicks.

“It’s magic then, magic now. What a thrill. Amen.”

Fleetwood then blows a kiss and flashes the peace sign to the camera to conclude the short clip. Buckingham and Nicks liked the video online, sending fans into a frenzy in the comments section, “Don’t. Toy. With. Us. We’re fragile,” one wrote of their online support.

“Mick.. we know you know we know you know,” another teased. “BUCKINGHAM NICKSSS is it happening mick??? Please say yes 💕,” a third asked.

The drummer’s clip comes months after Buckingham and Fleetwood reunited in the studio for the first time in seven years. Swedish record producer Carl Falk wrote about the moment on Threads.

“Slightly unreal moment to sit with Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood to play Lindsey the album we have been working on,” Falk said at the time.

“And to see his genuine happiness for Mick to finally do his own album and offering to play guitar and to sing on it,” the producer continued. “Can’t wait to finish this one.”

The drummer and guitarist’s recording session came seven years after Buckingham was kicked out of the band in 2018, which also marked the last time the group performed together.

He had been working on a solo album when the band was set to tour. The conflict reached a boiling point during a MusiCares performance.

“It was all Stevie’s doing,” Buckingham told PEOPLE in 2021 about his abrupt departure, referring to his former flame. “Stevie basically gave the band an ultimatum that either I had to go or she would go. It would be like [Mick] Jagger saying, “Well, either Keith [Richards] has to go or I’m going to go.’ “

Nicks, however, said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that what Buckingham claimed wasn’t true.

“I did not demand he be fired. Frankly, I fired myself. I proactively removed myself from the band and a situation I considered to be toxic to my well-being. I was done. If the band went on without me, so be it.”
