Michigan Senate Republicans shine light on personal projects

(The Center Square) – Michiganders curious about individual projects lawmakers want to spend taxpayer money on have a new option.

At least, citizens can learn about individual Republican projects in the Michigan Senate after the GOP launched a new website that tracks the spending requests.

Senate Democrats did not create a similar portal.

State budgets around the country and the federal budget often contain billions in personal projects – most commonly referred to as pork – that are hidden throughout the hundreds of pages of documents that make up a budget.

Michigan Senate Republicans want those projects easily found by anyone.

“Michigan families deserve a better budget process that is transparent, accountable and reflects the true needs of taxpayers,” said Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “While Democrats in control of the Senate have chosen to move forward in the dark, Senate Republicans are taking action to restore public trust and ensure that every request brings real value to improving our state.”

The site currently contains three items. Sen. Jon Bumstead, R-North Muskegon, asked for $1.9 million for a turn lane on Michigan Highway 20 in Shelby, while Sen. Mark Huizenga, R-Walker, wants $1.5 million to Mosaic Counseling to expand a pilot program in Grand Haven.

Also, Sen. Michele Hoitenga, R-Manton, asked for $1.9 million to fix culverts in downtown Cadillac.

“Increasing transparency into the budget process helps us to create a more responsible spending plan because it allows for a more open conversation and fully measures these items against our common goals and shared priorities,” Bumstead said. “By opening up this process, we are making sure that each request is evaluated on merit and serves a clear purpose for all Michigan residents.”

The list is expected to be updated as more requests are made.
