As formerly demonstrated by stars like Charli XCX and Kylie Jenner, there’s a way to do pirate dressing that won’t get you sent down the plank. And Michelle Williams clearly got the memo.
While out promoting her new show Dying for Sex in New York City on Tuesday, April 1, the Oscar-nominated actor wore a look fit for the seas, but it was no April Fool’s joke and no costume, rather, a stylish take on a buccaneer’s uniform.
If anything, Williams’s look proved that spring really has sprung, because nothing says transitional weather like mixing oversize items with mini pieces, and if the result makes you look like a pirate, well that’s just an added bonus.
It all started with a two-tone babydoll dress at the center, which featured spaghetti straps and an empire waist, with frilly white lace decorating the bust, while also forming a second tier underneath the bottom hem of the skirt.
While those white frills already had us thinking of pirate shirts, Williams took the fit a step further with her shoes—a pair of knee-high black leather boots with ruched detailing.
Finally, she rounded out the ensemble with a few equally-swashbuckling accessories, including a large gold tassel pendant necklace, as well as a burgundy (blood-red?) handbag with a gold chain strap.
The only detail that made the look feel a little more cosmopolitan was the addition of some black, square-shaped sunglasses, because everyone knows a pirate would just use eye patches instead.
