Michael Jordan’s Unwavering Stance: Why Load Management ‘Shouldn’t Be Needed’ in the NBA

Michael Jordan, universally acknowledged as one of basketball’s fiercest competitors, has expressed profound disappointment over the NBA’s prevailing load management trend, asserting that star players have a fundamental duty to perform for the fans who pay to see them, a philosophy he exemplified throughout his legendary career.

In a candid interview aired during the second installment of NBC’s “MJ: Insights to Excellence” series, Michael Jordan offered a cutting critique of load management, a practice increasingly common in the modern NBA where healthy players are rested for non-injury reasons. For Jordan, who built his legacy on relentless effort and a refusal to miss games, the concept is simply unnecessary.

“Well, it shouldn’t be needed, first and foremost,” Jordan stated unequivocally when asked by interviewer Mike Tirico about his thoughts on the matter. His rationale was deeply rooted in his personal drive and respect for the game’s audience. “I never wanted to miss a game because it was an opportunity to prove. It was something that I felt like the fans are there that watch me play. I want to impress that guy way up on top who probably worked his (butt) off to get a ticket or to get money to buy the ticket.”

This commitment extended even to those who came to cheer against him. “Yeah, because I know he’s probably yelling at me and I want to shut him up,” Jordan said, illustrating his competitive fire. “You have a duty that if they’re wanting to see you, and as an entertainer, I want to show. Right?” This perspective highlights a significant divide between the “old school” mentality, epitomized by Jordan, and the more analytical, long-term health strategies employed by contemporary NBA teams.

A Legacy Forged in Durability and Determination

Michael Jordan’s career is replete with examples of him playing through adversity, cementing his reputation for unparalleled dedication. He famously recounted playing with a sprained ankle early in his career, driven by a desire to “make a name for himself.” However, no instance embodies his philosophy more vividly than Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz.

On June 11, 1997, Jordan battled what he believed was food poisoning, leaving him severely ill and bedridden until mere ninety minutes before tip-off. Despite his condition, and forgoing a traditional warmup, Jordan took the court. This legendary performance, commonly known as “The Flu Game,” saw him score an astonishing 38 points, leading the Chicago Bulls to a pivotal win that brought them within one victory of the NBA title. Following the game, a visibly exhausted Jordan famously collapsed into the arms of teammate Scottie Pippen.

“I was going to find a way to get out there, even if I was a decoy,” Jordan explained. “Well, once I got out there, you never know how — pushing yourself — you never know what happens, right? … Next thing you know, the emotions, the situation, the need of the team. All those things catapulted me to, ‘I’m going to gut this thing out.'”

His commitment to playing was not an anomaly. Jordan played in all 82 regular-season games nine times in his 15-season career, including his final season at age 39 with the Washington Wizards. He played at least 78 games in 12 of his 15 seasons, with exceptions only due to a broken foot, returning from his first retirement, and knee surgery, as reported by Associated Press.

The Old School vs. New School Divide

Jordan’s insights illuminate the stark contrast between the playing philosophies of different NBA eras. Players from his time rarely considered resting unless physically incapacitated by injury. This unwavering availability resonated deeply with fans, who often had limited opportunities to see their favorite stars play live.

In recent years, the practice of load management, where healthy players sit out to conserve energy or mitigate injury risk, became so prevalent that the NBA intervened. To encourage stars to play more, the league implemented rules requiring players to appear in at least 65 games to be eligible for regular-season honors, a significant shift discussed by various sports outlets including The Republic.

While teams often cite scientific data and long-term health as reasons for resting players, this strategy has frequently angered fans. Many feel cheated out of seeing star players, especially when it’s their sole chance to attend a game featuring a league icon.

Jordan distinguished between genuine injury and intentional rest. “Physically, if I can do it and just don’t feel like doing it, that’s a whole different lens,” he said, drawing a clear line between playing through pain for the team’s benefit and simply choosing to sit out for comfort.

An Enduring Impact on Fan Culture

The intensity of Jordan’s career, and the fervor it inspired, continues to resonate within the fan community. Even decades later, certain moments are etched into basketball lore and fan consciousness. One such moment, his game-winning shot over Bryon Russell in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals, still sparks debate among Utah Jazz fans who famously insist Jordan “pushed off” to create space.

This moment’s legacy is so strong that, as recently as Monday, a wireless network in Utah’s arena reportedly still carried the name “JordanPushedOff”—an undeniable nod to that iconic, and contentious, play. This anecdote underscores the profound connection fans forge with players like Jordan, a bond built on unwavering dedication and memorable performances, reinforcing Jordan’s belief in a player’s inherent duty to the audience.
