From its famously ‘bizarre’ mother-son dynamic to its powerful messages about standing up to bullies, Michael J. Fox continues to offer fresh perspectives on why Back to the Future remains a beloved classic across generations. The iconic actor recently reflected on the film’s lasting impact, sharing candid behind-the-scenes details and even proposing an intriguing idea for a future remake.

Few films have captivated audiences and sparked multi-generational discussion quite like Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 masterpiece, Back to the Future. Decades after its initial release, the time-traveling adventure starring Michael J. Fox as the charismatic Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as the eccentric Doc Brown continues to resonate deeply with fans. Now, Fox himself is offering candid insights into the film’s unique appeal, from its most unconventional plot points to its profound underlying messages.

The Enduring Legacy of Hill Valley: A Timeless Connection

The film, which transports Marty from 1985 to 1955, has a surprising theory behind its lasting popularity, according to Fox. In a recent exclusive with Parade magazine, the actor explained that the passage of time has made the movie even more accessible. “The movie was made in 1985 and we go into 1955. But now that time span has been eclipsed,” Fox stated. “So even though there’s a huge gap of time, the movie is now more accessible because you don’t have to go into it with a connection to any period. So kids can watch it and not feel like they’re walking into something. They can just relate to the whole story.”

This enduring connection is evident in how fans continue to celebrate the franchise, with Fox noting that people don’t just like it, “they celebrate it and embrace it and get my face tattooed on their leg.” This level of devotion highlights the film’s profound cultural impact, which Fox admitted he only recently began to fully grasp, as reported by Entertainment Tonight.

Marty and Lorraine: The ‘Bizarre’ Mother-Son Dynamic

One aspect of Back to the Future that continues to raise eyebrows and generate discussion is the accidental romance between Marty and his future mother, Lorraine Baines McFly, played by Lea Thompson. Fox recently joked about this peculiar plotline, telling Variety, “not to be crude, but it’s a movie about almost f—ing your mom, and she’s totally ready for it.” He added, “Even at the time, I realized it was bizarre — plus Lea was pretty cute.”

Thompson herself acknowledges the strangeness, recalling how the pink pastel dress she wore during the iconic “Enchanted Under the Sea” dance scene still holds sentimental value. She shared with People magazine upon the film’s 30th anniversary that while the dress no longer fits her “big ol’ feet from having babies,” she still cherishes it. Thompson also observed the film’s incredible multi-generational appeal: “when I realized that my mother-in-law was watching the movie with her daughter, her daughter’s daughter, and her daughter’s daughter — like, four whole generations of people could enjoy a movie together — I was like, ‘wow! that’s the coolest thing ever.’”

Standing Up to Bullies: A Timeless Theme

Beyond the time-travel antics and comedic situations, Fox believes a deeper, more universal message contributes significantly to the film’s lasting resonance. He posits that the movie’s theme of confronting bullies remains incredibly relevant today. In an interview with Empire, Fox highlighted, “We live in a bully culture right now. We have bullies everywhere — you don’t need me to point the finger at who, but there are all these bullies.”

He drew a parallel to the film’s antagonist, Biff Tannen, played by Thomas F. Wilson, noting that such figures persist. Fox even connected this theme to his personal battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he views as his own “bully.” He emphasized that the film’s core message revolves around “how you stand up to them and the resolve that you take into the fight with them. It’s about your resilience and your courage,” making its message meaningful through universal struggle.

Behind the Scenes: Unpacking Iconic Moments

Fans often wonder about the specifics of filming such a groundbreaking movie. Fox recently pulled back the curtain on some key production details:

  • The DeLorean’s Reality: Despite its iconic status, the stainless steel time machine was far from a dream car to drive. Fox described it as “slapped together” and difficult to handle, with “the flux capacitor and time clocks all jammed in there so every time I shifted gears, I had blood running down my hands.” Multiple versions were used, including those cut horizontally or down the middle for specific shots.
  • Skateboarding Skills: Fox, a skilled skateboarder, performed many of his own stunts, including wheeling out of Doc’s lab and riding through Hill Valley. However, the more complex chase sequences involving Biff were handled by stuntman Charlie Croughwell, due to insurance limitations.
  • Crispin Glover’s Enigma: Crispin Glover, who played Marty’s father, George McFly, is notable for not appearing in the sequels and generally avoiding reunions. Fox expressed deep affection for Glover, calling him “hilarious” and admitting he remains “an enigma” to this day.
  • The Toughest Scene: Fox revealed that one of the most challenging scenes for him was when Marty returns to 1985 and believes Doc has been killed by the Libyans, breaking down in tears. Executive producer Steven Spielberg was initially concerned Fox wouldn’t be able to pull off the required emotion, but Fox is proud of his performance.
  • “Johnny B. Goode”: While Fox famously played the guitar in Marty’s electrifying performance, he confessed, “I can’t sing a lick! I’m a terrible singer!” The vocals were pre-recorded by singer Mark Campbell. Fox added that rockers like John Mayer and Chris Martin have told him they were inspired to play guitar because of that scene. Surprisingly, Chuck Berry, the song’s original artist, never reached out to Fox about the homage.

The Power of Connection: Reunions and Fan Love

The bond between the cast, particularly Fox and Christopher Lloyd, remains a cornerstone of the film’s appeal. In October, the pair reunited on stage at New York Comic-Con, 37 years after the film’s premiere. Fox described Lloyd as “the best guy,” noting their relationship evolved from colleagues to “kind of like my brother, to being a father figure.” He said he “threw my arms around him because I was so happy to see him,” reflecting the genuine affection fans adore.

Lloyd, for his part, expressed his continued amazement at the trilogy’s impact: “it continues to amaze me how deeply the Back to the Future films affected young people,” adding that it “still comes up all the time.” This sentiment echoes the powerful connection the film forged with its audience, transcending generations.

A New Future for Hill Valley? Fox’s Remake Idea

With the current trend of reboots and remakes, discussions often turn to whether Back to the Future could ever be revisited. Michael J. Fox has a unique pitch for a potential new iteration. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, he suggested, “if they did the movie again, they should do it with a girl as marty.” This idea has certainly sparked interest among fans and could offer a fresh perspective on the beloved storyline.

Beyond Acting: Michael J. Fox’s Enduring Activism

While Back to the Future launched Fox to superstardom, his later life has been profoundly shaped by his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. He has channeled his fame into a new, powerful platform with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. This organization has raised over $1.5 billion for research, emphasizing the crucial role of patients in finding a cure.

Fox, who now considers himself “retiring” from acting, found relief in this transition. He candidly shared that his Parkinson’s made acting frustrating, recalling a moment when he couldn’t remember his lines on stage. Embracing his new path, he lives by the philosophy of “show up for life and see what happens,” prioritizing his work with the foundation and spending time with his wife, Tracy, and their four children.
