  • Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is attached to direct a movie version of Miami Vice, multiple outlets reported

  • Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas starred in the original 1980s television series, and Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx starred in a 2006 film adaptation

  • Kosinski’s next movie F1 releases in theaters June 27

The director behind Top Gun: Maverick is bringing Miami Vice back — and to the big screen.

On Monday, April 28, multiple outlets reported that Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a Miami Vice movie for Universal Pictures. Filmmaker and screenwriter Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler, The Bourne Legacy) is set to adapt the 1980s television series that Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas starred in as Miami undercover cops for the big screen, per the outlets.

The new movie will mark the second attempt at bringing Miami Vice to movie theaters; in 2006, Michael Mann — who executive produced the series — directed Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in an adaptation that received mixed reviews from audiences and critics.

A representative for Universal did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Kosinski’s career soared to new heights in 2022 when Top Gun: Maverick charmed theatergoers and proved one of the year’s most successful movies at the box office. His next movie F1, which stars Brad Pitt, releases in theaters June 27. According to THR and Deadline, Kosinski has been discussing working on the project for some time.

Paramount Pictures, which Kosinski made Maverick with, has not yet officially greenlit a sequel to the Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell led fighter pilot action drama, which itself was a long-awaited sequel to a beloved 1980s property.

In March 2024, Bruckheimer, 81, told PEOPLE that Cruise, 62, had been pitched “a story he liked” for a third Top Gun, but the producer noted at the time that Cruise has a number of projects of his own in the works. “He’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see,” Bruckheimer said at that time.

Since Maverick, Kosinski has directed one other movie: 2022’s Spiderhead, with Chris Hemsworth. F1, which filmed at a number of real-life F1 Grand Prix events in recent years, debuts in theaters June 27.
