Prince Harry has often compared Meghan Markle to his mother, Princess Diana, who died in 1997.
On the April 28 episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Markle was asked how she feels about the things her husband has said about the similarities between her and the former Princess of Wales.
“So Harry said publicly, ‘So much of what Megan is and how she is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.’ How do you feel about him sharing that?” Lima asked Markle.
“It’s beautiful,” the Duchess of Sussex replied.
After getting engaged, Prince Harry said that his mom and his wife would have been “thick as thieves” and simply “best friends.” The comments came during the couple’s interview with BBC’s Mishal Husain in 2017.
While chatting on the Jamie Kern Lima Show, Markle said she wishes she “could have met” Diana.
After having children of their own, it was very important for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to ensure that the kids knew who “grandma Diana” was. In fact, on their Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, a black and white photo of Lady Di hanging on a wall in the couple’s Montecito home was shown on camera. At one point, Markle carried Archie over to the photo so that he could see her (she and Harry are also parents to daughter, Lilibet, whose middle name is Diana).
Princess Diana is never far from Prince Harry’s mind.
“As a husband and a parent, my mother’s voice is even stronger in my life,” Prince Harry said during a virtual ceremony for the Diana Award in 2022, according to Elle Canada.
“All of you have helped keep her voice alive by showing the world how each small action counts, how kindness is still valued, and how our world can be better if we choose to make it so. I know the memory I hold of my mum will never fade, because I see her spirit in each of you. So, thank you for keeping her fire alive,” he added.
