Lions are often called the “king of the jungle” for good reason. These impressive predators are incredibly powerful. A male lion can stand up to 4 feet tall at the shoulder, have a 10-foot-long body, and weigh as much as 550 pounds. Their bite force is strong enough to crush bones, and their specialized teeth are perfect for tearing meat. It’s no wonder they can take down prey weighing up to 1,000 pounds!

Are there any animals that could challenge a lion and win? While few would dare, this YouTube video highlights at least five animals that could potentially emerge victorious.

1. Cape Buffalo

These massive bovines, which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 5.5 feet tall at the shoulder, are a formidable force in East and South Africa. Both males and females sport weapon-like horns, but their true strength lies in their numbers.

Cape buffalo live in herds of 50 to 500 individuals, and their loyalty to the group is absolute. If a member of the herd is threatened, the group becomes highly aggressive, coordinating attacks and charging as a single, unstoppable unit. They are especially protective of their young, making them an animal that even a lion would think twice about confronting.

Cape buffalo and lions both inhabit sub-Saharan Africa, so encounters between them are not unusual. While lions are the primary predators of the Cape buffalo, a single lion rarely takes them on alone; to stand a fighting chance, they need the help of their pride. However, even a pride of lions may be outmatched by the sheer numbers of a powerful buffalo herd.

2. Nile Crocodile

One of the largest reptiles on Earth, the Nile crocodile can reach nearly 20 feet long and weigh over 1,500 pounds. These dangerous predators are protected by incredibly thick skin and bony plates along their backs, and are armed with dozens of bone-crushing teeth. Masters of ambush, Nile crocodiles wait just below the water’s surface before lunging out and dragging their prey to a watery grave.

Lion and Nile Crocodile Encounters

Lions and Nile crocodiles both inhabit sub-Saharan Africa, so encounters are common, especially near watering holes and rivers. These two apex predators may clash over a carcass, or a crocodile might attempt to ambush a thirsty lion. While rare, it’s also not unheard of for a lion to hunt a crocodile on land. However, if a lion were caught in the water by a Nile crocodile, it would have little to no chance of escape.

3. Elephant

The sheer size of an elephant makes it a daunting opponent for any predator. Males can weigh up to 7.5 tons, while females weigh up to nearly 4 tons. Their thick skin, powerful tusks, and high levels of intelligence make these giant land mammals a force to be reckoned with. They are also incredibly social, living in close-knit family groups, and they become terrifyingly aggressive when their young are threatened.

Lion and Elephant Encounters

Lions typically steer clear of elephants, so encounters are rare. However, during severe droughts, a pride of lions may become desperate enough to target a young, sick, or otherwise vulnerable elephant.

There is one interesting exception to this: the lion prides of Chobe National Park. Due to a severe lack of water and food, these unique lions have survived by learning how to hunt elephants.

4. Hippopotamus

Often considered one of the world’s most dangerous animals, the hippopotamus is a powerful force both in and out of the water. With thick skin and a weight of up to 9,920 pounds, a hippo’s sheer size is intimidating. Hippos also have enormous jaws that can open 180 degrees, revealing sharp tusks and an overpowering bite. They are social animals and live in groups that can easily challenge many potential threats. Few animals would ever dare to challenge a healthy adult hippo.

Lion and Hippo Encounters

Though both lions and hippos live in the same regions of Africa, their different habitats mean that encounters are not common. However, they do happen occasionally, especially when lions approach watering holes or attempt to cross rivers. Hippos are fiercely territorial and will attack any perceived threat, even if it’s not a direct challenge. Hippos do venture onto land at night to graze, giving lions a chance to target a young or vulnerable hippo. However, this is still extremely risky and only the most desperate lions would ever attempt it.

5. Tiger

The tiger is a formidable feline relative of the lion and the largest of all the big cats in Asia. Some subspecies can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh as much as 660 pounds. Tigers are solitary hunters, and their finely tuned skills allow them to take down a wide range of large animals, including deer, wild boar, buffalo, and even crocodiles. They usually hunt just once a week, but they can devour over 70 pounds of meat in a single night.

Lion and Tiger Encounters

Fortunately, lions and tigers rarely cross paths in the wild today, as their natural habitats are almost entirely separate. All remaining Asiatic lions live in western India’s state of Gujarat, while tigers inhabit a much broader range across Asia. Historically, however, their territories did overlap. The Asiatic lion and the now-extinct Caspian tiger once shared regions of Central Asia, and Asiatic lions and Bengal tigers once coexisted in parts of the Indian subcontinent. Even in these shared regions, however, conflicts were rare, as the two species preferred different habitats.
