Maury Povich spent years revealing whether or not the guests on his show were “the father,” but in real life, he is the dad of three children himself.
The iconic daytime television talk show host welcomed his two daughters, Susan and Amy, with his first wife, Phyllis Minkoff, before they divorced in the ’70s. He later remarried to his wife, Connie Chung, and they welcomed their son Matthew via adoption.
Most well-known for his televised paternity testing, Povich retired from his show Maury in 2022 after 31 seasons. While he keeps his family life private, he has spoken about how his dedication to his career when he was first getting his start impacted his relationship with his children.
“I made the terrible mistake of not being with my family, worried about my career, and that ended in a divorce,” Povich admitted in a 2022 interview with CBS. “The biggest mistake I’ve made was putting my job before my family. That was unconscionable.”

Povich’s older daughter, Susan, was born in June 1963.
Susan attended Harvard Law School after graduating from the University of Michigan, per her LinkedIn. She practiced law in New York in the ’90s before going to culinary school and working in the restaurant industry.
In May 1998, Susan married Ralph Winthrop Gorham in her father’s apartment in Manhattan, according to an announcement in The New York Times. They went to welcome two children together: daughter Charley and son Jesse.
In a 2023 interview with Celebrity Parents magazine, Susan explained how she quit a big law firm after 18 months to go to culinary school. She worked in various restaurants and eventually opened one before deciding she didn’t want to do that either.
“I was much more passionate about cooking for my friends and family,” she said, adding that she went back to being a lawyer for 15 years before opening her lobster joint in 2008. “I love feeding people and this was a way of mixing those two things.”
Susan founded the popular Brooklyn-based lobster pound, Red Hook Lobster, with her husband. The idea to open the venture was inspired by trips the couple took to Maine, where Susan grew up.
After one Thanksgiving visit, the two were enjoying lobsters they brought back from Portland when Ralph suggested they open their own place in their neighborhood, Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Now, Red Hook Lobster is considered one of the top lobster spots nationwide.
Out of all of Povich’s kids, Susan is the most active on social media. Her Instagram page features photos of her family, especially her two kids. She is also a fan of traveling, taking trips everywhere from Portugal to Puerto Rico.

Povich and Minkoff welcomed their second daughter, Amy, on Jan. 5, 1967.
She is the most private of her siblings, with no public social media profiles.
According to The New York Times, Amy graduated from Connecticut College and then went to Yale University, where she received a master’s degree in acting.
At one point, Amy seemed to be following in her father’s footsteps in the entertainment world. She was an actress who appeared in movies such as Transamerica and Labor Pains and in shows including Law & Order and Sex and the City.
She married physician and author David Agus in 1994. They have two children and live in California, according to his website.

After Povich split with his first wife, he dated Chung for seven years until the two wed in 1984. Following difficulty with in-vitro fertilization, the pair welcomed their son, Matthew, in 1995 via adoption, she told NPR’s Tell Me More.
“I don’t see myself as becoming a mom. To me having our son and having him attached to my arm was all about him,” she shared during a September 2024 interview with Today of how it felt to welcome Matthew.
She continued, “And that is the most wonderful thing because I was concentrating on myself and my job and everything. I was so self-absorbed. And then, all the sudden, I’m pouring all my love into this beautiful baby.”
During the interview, Chung revealed that Matthew had recently proposed to his fiancée, Hunter, whom he had dated for over nine years.
“He’s just like mom and dad,” Chung said. “Maury and I were together seven years before both of us got on the same page.”
