Mary-Louise Parker, 61, Reflects on Fame, Privacy and Doing Hollywood Her Own Way originally appeared on Parade.
As she gets ready to celebrate her 61st birthday on August 2, Mary-Louise Parker reflected on how she’s handled fame over the years. In a time when plenty of celebrities share anything and everything about their lives, Parker has taken a different approach.
“I’m probably one of the few people you’ve ever met who has never read their Wikipedia page,” Parker said during an interview with Page Six published on July 13. “I think it’s bad to look at things like that. I just think that they can get in [your head] and then you think about them too much.”
It’s a powerful admission from the Fried Green Tomatoes star who has spent decades dodging Hollywood’s typical rules. Despite her time in award-winning shows like Weeds and The West Wing, Parker has never let her notoriety dictate her life. She’s long been guarded about her private world and has spoken candidly about not enjoying the spotlight. While she’s shared glimpses into her life as a single mom, Parker’s never made a habit of bringing her children into the public eye. When she does agree to interviews, they’re tied to her work. Plus, she’s avoided the siren call of social media by choice.
On top of all of that, the Red actress hasn’t remained insistent on working only in film. Parker has made regular returns to Broadway throughout the years, and she’s even earned two Tony Awards for her skills.
Other celebrities like Tom Holland and Chrissy Teigen have admitted to either Googling themselves or editing their own Wikipedia pages, and Neil Gaiman even writes entire blog posts explaining specific entries that Wikipedia got wrong.
While other stars spend their 60s polishing their brands or working on passion projects, Parker seems even more at ease in her own skin, and it shows. Fans can catch her in her latest role as Mrs. Sigby in the horror mini-series The Institute.
