Marvel Star, 52, Gives Massive Update on Returning as Iconic Character originally appeared on Parade.
Actress and model Rebecca Romijn is teasing some information about returning to play her X-Men character, Mystique, also known as Raven Darkhölme, for the upcoming MCU film, Avengers: Doomsday.
While speaking to Variety at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, alongside her Star Trek: Strange New Worlds castmates, Romijn confirmed she has filmed for Avengers: Doomsday. She also said she was “very surprised and thrilled” when she was approached to reprise the character, which she played in X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: First Class. In addition, she said the situation was “very surreal.”
“[It was] extremely fun to be with my old cast and my new cast,” said the 52-year-old actress.
Romijn also discussed her role in Avengers: Doomsday with The Hollywood Reporter at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, held the weekend of July 25. Romijn told the publication that she’s “not quite sure” whether or not all the Mystique scenes for Avengers: Doomsday have been filmed.
“The script hasn’t — they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been very, very fun, and we don’t know yet. They keep everything very close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps,” said Romijn during the interview.
She also said her “brain was really trying to organize” the fact that she was back portraying “a character [she] played 25 years ago, 20 years ago.”
“I had crazy dreams while I was there for a large chunk of shooting. Like, really kind of regressive dreams,” said the mother of two.
In addition, Romijn suggested she didn’t have any difficulty playing Mystique again, as she “know[s] her very well.”
“I went back in with full ownership of her,” said Romijn.
She then explained that “it was very nice to go back and play that character, ‘cause [she] had imposter syndrome” when she was first cast as the shape-shifter for X-Men, which premiered in 2000.
“I thought, maybe at the very beginning, I was just cast because I happened to be the model who was available to play Mystique at that moment. I mean, I auditioned and I got the role, because when you’re very young, you’re like, Do I deserve to be here? And I did not have that going back this time. It was a very different experience,” said Romijn.
