Martin Short offered hope about the future of Only Murders in the Building.

The actor, 75, addressed how long the beloved Hulu series could last during his Friday, August 15, appearance on Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast.

“I think that the reality is, you know when it feels like it’s past its time,” he said. “I think everyone’s amazed that it’s gone this long. This is a long time in streaming to go five years. The Dick Van Dyke Show ended after five years because one of the reasons was that they were afraid of losing the quality of it. But then, Friends went how long, and they were always brilliant.”

For the record, Friends aired for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004.

As for Only Murders in the Building, Short will return for his fifth season as Oliver Putnam in September. He stars alongside Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage and Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora on the show, which follows the trio of true crime fans as they solve murders in their upscale New York City apartment building.

Elsewhere in the interview, Short — who won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and has been nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for his performance on Only Murders in the Building — discussed the critical acclaim he has received after decades in Hollywood.

“It’s a great show, it’s well written, it’s well directed, it’s well crafted, and it’s a hit,” he explained. “Those things are very rare. … It’s not only obviously great to be nominated for things, but to be so personally pleased with the outcome of the show is amazing.”

Short is equally proud of “the reputation [the series] has as a workplace in New York.”

He continued: “It is a very loose set, and one of the reasons is because Steve and Selena and I all work the exact same way, screwing around, getting the crew to laugh. Everyone is laughing, and … action! Oh a, screw up, laughing. That kind of joie de vivre is what permeates the set, and I think that it translates a little bit to the camera as well.”

Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building premieres on Hulu September 9.
