(The Center Square) – Recent polling data shows the Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani well ahead of the competition in the race for New York City mayor.
Democrats and Republicans alike have fretted over the potential for a candidate who occupies a space to the left of the current American political conversation taking on such a powerful role in America’s biggest city.
Far fewer have entertained that Mamdani’s Democratic Socialist platform is in alignment with New York’s voters. Real Clear polling averages show a nearly 10% lead over the next closest competitor, Andrew Cuomo.
A video recently surfaced showing Mamdani advocating for a statewide housing guarantee, a move several steps beyond the housing reforms currently suggested in Mamdani’s platform.
“Any system that could guarantee each person housing, whether you call it the abolition of private property or you call it, you know, just a statewide housing guarantee, it is preferable to what is going on right now.”
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, succinctly stated the arguments from detractors, posting to X, “He is a communist.”
Other reactions to the video on X included several calls for Mamdani’s death.
Some have expressed fear about what putting limits on individual property ownership in New York would do to the housing market. As it stands, New York City real estate is big business.
Mamdani’s supporters, however, say that profit is coming at the expense of people’s ability to meet their most basic needs. According to the United Way, the barebones monthly housing cost for a single parent with two children in the Bronx, the city’s most affordable neighborhood, is over $2,000 monthly. The total cost of living is nearly $5,000 per month. In Manhattan, that figure is almost $8,000.
At the same time Mamdani has risen to prominence in New York City, progressives have amassed huge audiences advocating against growing wealth inequality in the U.S. In particular, fellow Democratic Socialist and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, has made waves with Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in his Fighting “Oligarchy” tour.
