Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has amassed over $1 million in campaign contributions for his New York City mayoral bid, The Hill reported Saturday.
This allowed Mamdani to surpass both former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and incumbent Democratic Mayor Eric Adams in recent fundraising efforts, according to The Hill. Mamdani collected just over $1 million between July 12 and Aug. 18 through small-dollar donations, the city’s campaign finance board reported. His grassroots campaign drew an average contribution of $121, with donors split almost equally between New York residents and out-of-state supporters.
The fundraising numbers dwarf those of his competitors during the same period. Cuomo, also running as an independent, raised $541,301 with an average donation of $646. Some of these funds came from his former state campaign account, the outlet reported. Adams, also campaigning as an independent, brought in $425,181 with contributions averaging $770.
Mamdani‘s fundraising advantage corresponds with his position in recent polling. August surveys show him leading the five-candidate race by substantial margins, according to The Hill. A Sienna College poll found Mamdani ahead by almost 20 points, while Decision Desk HQ’s poll average projects him beating Cuomo by 13 points. The candidate’s platform includes implementing a rent freeze, establishing city-run grocery stores, and providing free childcare. These proposals have gained traction with voters who have dubbed him the “champion” of working-class New Yorkers.
