Madonna arrived on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet on May 5, marking the star’s first appearance at the event since 2018.

The “Vogue” superstar, 66, commanded the red carpet in a boss-coded power suit teamed with an unexpected accessory — a cigar.

While photographed at the star-studded event, Madonna was seen smoking a cigar while showing off her monochromatic look, which featured a satiny white suit topped with a boutonniere, a button-up top with a bow tie and lace gloves. The entire outfit came courtesy of Tom Ford, designed by Haider Ackermann.

Last October, Vogue announced Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour would be co-chairs for this year’s Met Gala, alongside LeBron James as honorary chair. The event, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which is the theme for the gala.

Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton shared that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”

The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.

The Met Gala’s dress code for this year is “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. This year’s event also has a star-studded host committee, which includes Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese, and Usher.

A hallmark of Madonna’s life has been the performer’s distinctive sense of style.

From the infamous Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra she wore for performances on her Blond Ambition tour to a dress dripping in $20 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds that she wore for the 1991 Academy Awards with date Michael Jackson, the icon loves to push the boundaries of fashion.

For her last Met Gala appearance in 2018, Madonna turned to Gaultier for a black ball gown featuring a mesh cross-shaped cutout in the front and a towering golden crown made of dozens of crosses, perched on top of a netted black veil draped over her face.

That year’s Met Gala theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in honor of an exhibition from the Costume Institute inspired by Catholicism and Vatican artifacts. Beyond the carpet, Madonna took the theme that year to the next level with a surprise performance, for which she changed into an angelic all-white ensemble, inside the event.

In previous years, Madonna has worn everything from a camouflage Moschino dress complete with a leafy cargo net train in 2017 (a year dedicated to Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo and her label Comme des Garçons) to a provocative custom Givenchy gown in 2016, the year of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

In a since-deleted Instagram post, Madonna wrote that her skin-baring outfit was as much a fashion statement as a “political one.”

“The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society,” she wrote, per Vanity Fair. “I have never thought in a limited way and I’m not going to start. We cannot [a]ffect change unless we are willing to take risks.”

“If you have a problem with the way I dress it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I’m not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me,” she added.

Madonna has been attending the biggest night in fashion since 1997.
