Luke Grimes, the actor who brought Kayce Dutton to life in Yellowstone, opens up about his return in the new CBS procedural Marshals, revealing his initial hesitation and the emotional stakes for his character in this bold new chapter.

The Yellowstone universe has expanded, and this time, it’s former Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton taking center stage. After the conclusion of the main series left fans believing Kayce (portrayed by Luke Grimes) had ridden into the Montana sunset for good, Taylor Sheridan had other plans.

In a surprising turn of events, Grimes agreed to reprise his role in Marshals, a new CBS procedural that follows Kayce’s involvement with the U.S. Marshals team. But why did he return after seemingly closing the book on Kayce’s journey? The answer lies in a mix of loyalty, emotion, and the intriguing new direction of the character.

A Farewell That Wasn’t: Why Kayce’s Yellowstone Story Continued

When Yellowstone wrapped up its final season in 2024, Kayce Dutton appeared to have found peace. Living on the East Camp section of the Dutton-Yellowstone ranch with his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill), it seemed his battle-scarred journey had reached its happy ending.

Grimes himself believed this was the end. “I thought it was over,” he admits. But Sheridan had a different vision. A phone call from the creator changed everything. “Taylor called and said, ‘Meet them, because it’s a good idea for a show.’ I was really on the fence,” Grimes reveals.

Despite his initial hesitation, Grimes was intrigued by the idea of Kayce taking on a new challenge. “This character is really his baby, but [Sheridan] wanted this thing to take wings on its own,” Grimes explains. And so, Kayce Dutton was back in the saddle, trading ranch life for a role in the U.S. Marshals.

The Procedural Thirteen: A New Challenge for Kayce Dutton

One significant shift for Grimes was adapting to Marshals’ procedural format. “I had no clue what a procedural was,” he admits, laughing. “I’d never watched one, but my mom loves them.”

After consulting an actor friend to understand the formula, Grimes cautiously agreed to the project. “I was a little wary about whether it would work, taking this character from a show like Yellowstone that was very much not a procedural,” he says. But the team managed to thread the needle, blending Kayce’s emotional depth with the investigative structure of the U.S. Marshals.

The new series, premiering March 1 on CBS and Paramount+, sees Kayce reluctantly joining his old military buddy Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) on a team hunting down fugitives across Montana. And yes, there’s plenty of horseback riding—something Grimes, now a skilled rider, can handle with ease.

The Elephant in the Room: Where Is Monica Dutton?

One of the most pressing questions surrounding Marshals is the conspicuous absence of Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille). Trailers and promotional material have left fans questioning whether Monica’s omission is a storytelling choice or something more permanent.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to say,” Grimes teases. Fans have speculated that Monica may have died, but Grimes remains coy. “Everyone’s bringing it up. But they’re going to find out soon.”

Even without Monica, Kayce isn’t entirely alone. Brecken Merrill returns as Tate, now a teenager, while Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo Brings Plenty reprise their roles from Yellowstone. The connection to the Broken Rock Reservation continues, blending Kayce’s past with his present.

Life Imitating Art: Grimes’s Montana Roots and Music Career

In a twist of real-life drama, Grimes has embraced the Montana lifestyle. Living on a 25-acre ranch with his wife, model Bianca Rodrigues Grimes, and their toddler son Rigel, he’s embraced the cowboy life both on and off-screen.

Grimes’s passion extends beyond acting. His sophomore country album, Redbird, drops April 3, featuring a song called “Haunted,” which plays a pivotal role in the season premiere of Marshals. “I wrote it about losing someone close to me,” he explains. “It was personal, but I thought it would elevate the scene. The showrunner agreed.”

Fatherhood has also influenced his music. “Hummingbird,” another track from the album, was written when Rigel was just six months old. “He’s 16 months now, and everything changes so fast,” Grimes says, laughing. “Writing a song for your kid without it being cheesy is hard. That’s the closest I could get.”

Why Marshals Matters: A New Chapter in the Yellowstone Universe

Marshals isn’t just another spinoff; it’s a bold new direction for the Yellowstone franchise. By shifting Kayce into a procedural format, the series introduces a dynamic that bridges the gap between the Western drama fans love and the crime-solving structure of network television.

For Luke Grimes, this return marks a chance to explore Kayce Dutton in uncharted territory—emotionally, professionally, and creatively. Whether he’s tracking fugitives, navigating fatherhood, or reconnecting with family ties, Kayce remains a character audiences can’t resist.

And with Taylor Sheridan remaining involved as executive producer, fans can trust that Marshals will honor the heart of Yellowstone while forging its own identity.

MARSHALS Premieres March 1st on CBS (8ET/PT) and Paramount+.
