NEED TO KNOW

  • Luke Combs broke down in tears while performing at Newport Folk Festival on Saturday, July 26 while singing “Whoever You Turn Out To Be”

  • He composed himself and was able to finish the song, telling the crowd he was “in the moment”

  • Combs released his latest album, Fathers and Sons in 2024

Luke Combs became emotional while performing at a recent concert.

In a fan video shared via TikTok, the “Beautiful Crazy” singer started crying during his set at Newport Folk Festival on Saturday, July 26 while singing “Whoever You Turn Out To Be,” a song about watching your children grow up.

Combs, 35, was overcome with emotion after he sang the lyrics, “But you ain’t gotta change the world to make your daddy proud.”

The country star then wiped his face with a towel and composed himself before continuing the song while the crowd cheered him on during the brief singing break. “

Sorry. That got me a little bit,” he told the audience.

He finished the emotional song from his 2024 album Fathers and Sons and then spoke to the audience at the Fort Adams State Park event. “I remember why we don’t play that one very much,” he said, which got a laugh from the crowd.

“I apologize,” Combs said, before clarifying, “I don’t apologize, because I was in the moment there.”

Fans rallied around him in the comments section following the emotional moment. “The reason his music is so good – he feels all what he sings the same way,” one pointed out.

“Oh I love him so much! This song makes me cry too! 😭🥰,” another said. “I sobbed when I first heard this song 😭,” a third wrote.

“Song makes me cry too Luke lol. Don’t apologize,” someone sympathized.

Combs spoke to PEOPLE in May about being a dad to sons Tex, 3 and Beau, who turns 2 in August, and how he likes to keep his role as a dad his top priority over being a performer.

“I don’t even think [my sons] know what I do,” he said, referring to his career. “My son Tex is almost 3 now. He’ll recognize my voice on the radio, and he will know ‘That’s Dad,’ but he doesn’t understand all of this.”

“He probably just thinks everybody’s dad has a single on the radio, you know what I mean?” Combs quipped. “To him, it’s normal — and I kind of want to keep it like that.”

He also spoke about how his views on touring have changed over time, especially since becoming a father. “I want my kids to know that my job is not more important than they are,” Combs concluded. “You know what I mean?”

With Fathers and Sons, Combs reflected on fatherhood, calling it a “selfish endeavor.” “It was something that I felt like I wanted to do and something that I wanted to say,” he told PEOPLE.

“And it’s my favorite thing that I’ve done because it’s so personal to me, but commercially, it’s easily my least successful album that I’ve had. It’s not really something that bothers me, though, because of the reason that I did it,” said Combs.
