Luke Bryanisn’t actually feuding with Blake Shelton — but he’s not in a rush to clear that up, either.
For years, the two country stars have been at the center of speculation about whether their jabs at each other are rooted in rivalry or friendship. According to Bryan, the rumors do more good than harm, and he’s happy to let fans keep wondering.
“I mean people will really worry about me and Blake,” Bryan tells Audacy. “The day that country music loses that or any of that gets lost. … There’s real beefs that go on, but I don’t have time for beefs. I just wanna grill the beef.”
Their supposed feud has become something of an inside joke in the country music community — including playful quips exchanged in interviews, social media posts and on stage. But Bryan admits that not everyone always gets the joke.
“I think that’s the hurdle in society this day. When you go into comedy, the comedians, they gotta go for the big joke,” Bryan explains.
“Sometimes if I’m having fun up there, I wanna go for the big joke. And if you do that, there’s a percentage that they’re not always gonna land like you want them. But I think you gotta trust your fans to know you got a good heart under there and don’t twist it around too much.”
Much of the playful rivalry dates back at least to 2018, when Bryan made headlines after commenting on Shelton’s music in a People interview.
Referring to Shelton’s then-girlfriend, now-wife Gwen Stefani, Bryan joked, “Your girlfriend is the only reason people are listening to your last two singles.”
That moment helped cement the public perception of a back-and-forth, which surfaced again last year on the radio showTaste of Country Nights after Shelton teased Bryan about being “on steroids.”
“Do I look ‘roided? Is there ‘roids in donuts?” Bryan jokingly replied.
While some fans may still wonder if there’s any real tension, Bryan’s comments are clear that it’s all in good fun. While the banter between him and Shelton may not be entirely serious, it keeps fans entertained — and in country music, that’s often half the point.
