Luigi Mangione’s lawyers have filed a court motion claiming that Attorney General Pam Bondi’s decision to seek the death penalty in his case was influenced by her prior work as a lobbyist for a firm representing UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. This alleged conflict of interest could potentially impact the outcome of the case.

Luigi Mangione, the 27-year-old suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has had his lawyers contend that Attorney General Pam Bondi’s decision to seek the death penalty against him was tainted by her prior work as a lobbyist at a firm that represented the insurer’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group.

Bondi, who was a partner at Ballard Partners before leading the Justice Department, has been accused by Mangione’s lawyers of having a “profound conflict of interest” due to her involvement in the case, which they argue violated his due process rights. They are seeking to have prosecutors barred from seeking the death penalty and some charges thrown out.

Mangione’s defense team, led by the husband-and-wife duo of Karen Friedman-Agnifilo and Marc Agnifilo, argued that Bondi’s past lobbying work and her continued financial stake in the case through a profit-sharing arrangement with Ballard Partners have created a conflict of interest that should have led her to recuse herself from the case.

The case has garnered significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the alleged motives behind the crime. Thompson, 50, was killed on December 4, 2024, as he walked to a Manhattan hotel for UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. Surveillance video showed a masked gunman shooting him from behind, with the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” written on the ammunition, mimicking a phrase used to describe how insurers avoid paying claims.

Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to federal and state murder charges, was arrested five days after the killing at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. His lawyers have also sought to suppress certain evidence found during his arrest, including a gun that police said matched the one used to kill Thompson and a notebook in which he purportedly described his intent to “wack” a health insurance executive.

As the case continues to unfold, the allegations of conflict of interest against Attorney General Bondi have raised questions about the integrity of the justice system and the potential for political influence in high-profile cases. The hearing scheduled for January 9 will be closely watched as Mangione’s lawyers push for the death penalty to be taken off the table and for some charges to be dismissed.
