Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli Separate: Unpacking the End of a 27-Year Marriage and the Lingering Shadow of Scandal

After 27 years of marriage, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli have separated, a decision that follows years of public scrutiny from the ‘Varsity Blues’ college admissions scandal and marks a new chapter for the high-profile couple as they navigate their individual paths forward.

In news that has captivated celebrity watchers and fans of classic television alike, actor Lori Loughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli have separated after 27 years of marriage. The confirmation came on Thursday, October 2, from Loughlin’s representative, Elizabeth Much, who stated that the couple is “living apart and taking a break from their marriage.” This separation signifies a significant shift for the duo, who have been a prominent fixture in the public eye for decades, particularly in recent years.

The couple, who exchanged vows in 1997, share two adult daughters: Bella Rose Giannulli, 27, and Olivia Jade Giannulli, 26. While the news marks the end of a long-term union, Much also confirmed to People that there are “no legal proceedings at this time,” indicating that a divorce filing is not immediately on the horizon.

The Lingering Shadow of the College Admissions Scandal

This decision to separate arrives more than five years after Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli became central figures in the notorious “Varsity Blues” college admissions scandal. In 2020, the couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, acknowledging their involvement in paying substantial bribes to secure their daughters’ admission to the University of Southern California (USC).

The scheme involved a payment of US$500,000 to designate their daughters as crew team recruits, despite neither Bella nor Olivia Jade having participated in the sport. This deception led to significant legal consequences for both Loughlin and Giannulli:

  • Lori Loughlin served two months in prison, was released in December 2020, and was ordered to pay a $150,000 fine along with 150 hours of community service.
  • Mossimo Giannulli served a five-month prison sentence, paid a $250,000 fine, and completed 250 hours of community service.

The scandal not only impacted their freedom but also significantly affected their public images and professional careers, with Loughlin losing contracts and Giannulli’s fashion business experiencing setbacks.

Financial Stakes: An $80 Million Empire in Question

Should the couple eventually proceed with divorce, considerable financial assets would be at stake. Their shared net worth is estimated to be approximately $80 million. Celebrity divorce attorneys note that while there would be no issues concerning child custody or support given their daughters are adults, the division of property and potential alimony would be primary considerations.

A crucial factor in such proceedings would be the existence of a prenuptial agreement, which is common in the entertainment and fashion industries. Without one, California’s community property laws would likely dictate a 50/50 split of assets acquired during their 27-year marriage. However, if a prenup is in place, it would likely specify that each party retains their respective businesses and earnings, with no alimony exchanged.

One notable shared asset is their nearly 12,000-square-foot home in Hidden Hills, which they purchased in August 2020 after selling their Bel-Air mansion amidst the scandal. The Hidden Hills property was listed for $16.5 million in February and is now priced at $14.95 million, as noted on Christie’s Real Estate. The couple is also rumored to own vacation properties in Idaho and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The decision to list their home months before announcing their separation suggests a prolonged period of difficulty. As one family law attorney observed, “If they put the house up in February and now they’re living separately, clearly they couldn’t continue to live together, which says a lot.”

Post-Scandal Comebacks and Personal Reflections

Following her release from prison, Lori Loughlin has steadily made her return to acting. She reprised her role in the spin-off “When Hope Calls” in 2021 and has since appeared in several holiday romantic comedies. Notably, she made a guest appearance on the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” humorously referencing her past legal troubles.

In an April 2024 interview with First For Women, Loughlin spoke candidly about the importance of forgiveness, stating, “I try to be a forgiving person. I’m not one to hold onto stuff. Stuff happens to everyone. We’ve all been in positions to ask for forgiveness but to ask for it, you have to learn and know how to give forgiveness, too.” This sentiment reflects a period of personal growth and a desire to move forward from the negativity surrounding the scandal.

For Mossimo Giannulli, whose fashion brand Mossimo was founded in 1986 and achieved significant early success, the scandal brought financial repercussions, with sales reportedly suffering. His journey post-prison has been less public than Loughlin’s, but both have faced the challenge of rebuilding their lives and careers under intense scrutiny.

What This Means for Loughlin and Giannulli’s Future

The separation of Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli signals a new, distinct phase for both individuals. While the immediate focus is on their personal break, the long-term implications for their respective careers, financial arrangements, and public personas remain to be seen. For fans, it’s a reminder that even after navigating significant public scandals, personal relationships can still face their own complex challenges.
