Just a little over a week after dropping her first new song in four years, Lorde has decided to return to the spotlight in a major way. And what better place to stage a red-carpet comeback than at fashion’s biggest night?
Tonight, Lorde is among the legion of A-list stars ascending the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s carpeted steps for the 2025 Met Gala. Joining the ranks of fellow pop royalty, Lorde looked glamorous in a silvery gray set with a lustrous sheen, comprised of a not-quite-bandeau (AKA a rectangular strip of fabric tastefully placed across her chest) and a slinky maxi skirt. She covered up her shoulders with a matching tuxedo jacket, then further coordinated with gray pointed-toe mules.
The dress code for this year’s Met Gala is “Tailored for You,” which is derived from the Costume Institute’s exhibition theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The Institute developed the theme by taking inspiration from Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, a 2009 book by Barnard College professor Monica L. Miller.
“I feel that the show itself marks a really important step in our commitment to diversifying our exhibitions and collections, as well as redressing some of the historical biases within our curatorial practice,” head curator Andrew Bolton said. “It’s very much about making fashion at the Met more of a gateway to access and inclusivity.”
This is the first exhibition since 2003 that will be solely focused on menswear. Appropriately, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton have been appointed as co-chairs.
Lorde last attended the Met Gala in 2021—notably, the same year that she released her last studio album, Solar Power. As Lorde revs up for the June 2025 release of her fourth studio album, Virgin, fans can likely look forward to even more public appearances from the pop star.
