Long-Awaited ‘Gremlins’ Sequel Is Currently in the Works originally appeared on Parade.
If there’s one thing audiences love, it’s a long-belated sequel to a classic comedy, especially when it comes to beloved ’80s films like The Goonies, Spaceballs, Beetlejuice or Gremlins.
Fortunately, as with each of these respective movies, a long-awaited Gremlins sequel is currently making critical headway in development, as confirmed by original star Zach Galligan.
Appearing at the recent Manchester Comic-Con earlier this week, the 61-year-old Galligan – best known for his roles in both Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch – spoke about the potential for a third entry in the cult favorite dark comedy franchise.
When asked whether viewers might one day see a sequel to Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Galligan confirmed that a new script for Gremlins 3 has recently been completed.
“I am happy to report that, after 35 years, they have come up with a script,” Galligan said. “Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it. Apparently, it’s waiting upon Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
Doubling down on his comments related to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Galligan went on to explain that newfound interest in nostalgic ’80s properties have given new life to familiar franchises, allowing series like Gremlins to find traction among modern audiences.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a very interesting test case if you’re a studio executive at Warner Bros.,” Galligan observed. “Here’s an intellectual property, it’s been around for 34 years, 1988 to 2024. Absolutely nothing to promote it. No Beetlejuice 2 before. Just a movie that was a moderate hit at the time. And the property sat on the shelf forthree-and-a-half decades.”
“They bring back Tim Burton, they bring back three key actors — Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, they throw in Jenna Ortega, who’s terrific — and boom,” Galligan continued. “And so that’s why you have now Chris Columbus working on Goonies 2. And now you have Gremlins 3 on the cusp, just a whisker away from being green-lit.”
