The Senate gave President Trump’s agenda a massive push forward in passing the “big, beautiful bill,” after more than a day of amendment votes and critical negotiations, with Vice President Vance breaking the 50-50 tie.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and allies worked overnight to reach a deal with Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to pass the legislation. The upper chamber could afford to lose only three votes, and three Republicans voted with Democrats: Rand Paul (Ky.), Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Susan Collins (Maine). Vance arrived at the Capitol around 6:30 a.m. in case his vote was needed.
After a 27-hour vote-a-rama, the legislation squeaked through. The measure now moves to the House for debate and a final vote, before it heads to Trump’s desk. The House Rules Committee is expected to convene Tuesday afternoon to craft rules for the legislation’s consideration.
Trump, meanwhile, is visiting a new migrant detention facility in Florida’s Everglades, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) joined him for the tour.
