Catholic cardinals on Thursday elected Robert Francis Prevost, an American, as their 267th pontiff on Thursday. He took the name Pope Leo XIV.

Earlier in the day, President Trump announced the framework for a new trade deal with the United Kingdom on Thursday morning.
Trump, referring to the announcement as a “deal,” said it includes billions of dollars of increased market access for American exports, especially in agriculture by increasing access to U.S. beef, ethanol and other farming products. The specifics are still being finalized.
On the Hill, FBI Director Kash Patel appeared before an Appropriations subcommittee, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem testified in front of a different Appropriations panel, both on budget plans. Also on the Hill: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He appeared at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, House Republicans continue their week of jockeying to find common ground on a reconciliation bill to kick Trump’s agenda into gear. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) says it will be ready for Memorial Day, which is less than three weeks away.
