The Sierra Club is reportedly cutting staff members for a second time this year, according to E&E News.

The environmental nonprofit reportedly announced that it will cut around 30 employees, according to E&E News. At least two other major green groups — the Rocky Mountain Institute and the Ocean Conservancy — have reportedly announced cut jobs this year, signaling a broader shift in the climate activism space as the Trump administration rolls back numerous policy victories that the Biden administration handed to the well-funded environmentalist lobby.

“The Sierra Club must be a strong leader against the Trump administration’s attempts to eliminate bedrock environmental policies and protections,” Dylan Plummer, representative for the Sierra Club Unit of the Progressive Workers Union, told E&E News. “It’s incomprehensible that the Sierra Club board and executive leadership would again discard the very people who stand on the front lines every single day to carry out this work.” (RELATED: Green Energy Think Tank Reportedly Cuts Staff After DOE Grant Cancellations)

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 and has been involved in political and environmental activism for years. The nonprofit tallies a list of successes on its website, citing the closures of 382 coal plants since its founding as one such victory.

The green group lists its core values as “anti-racism, balance, collaboration, justice, and transformation” on its site. It has acted on these principles by publicly condemning its cofounder’s “racist” remarks he made over 100 years ago and partnering with other activist groups to file lawsuits against major fossil fuel energy projects, including one against federal agencies to halt a liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminal in May 2024.

President Donald Trump declared an energy emergency immediately upon returning to office and has moved to expand domestic energy production in order to address a looming grid crisis brought about by increased electricity demand and green energy mandates. The Trump administration and energy policy experts have condemned actions by environmental groups that impede U.S. energy development, a stark change from the Biden administration’s penchant to block conventional energy production to instead favor green energy initiatives.

The Trump administration has cancelled large loans and grants that were greenlit under former President Joe Biden to fund green energy projects and activist groups. Additionally, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Zeldin announced the “biggest deregulatory action in U.S. history” to allow energy markets to thrive on March 12, taking aim at a host of aggressive regulations implemented by the Obama and Biden administrations.

The Sierra Club did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
