One rebound shy of the oldest triple-double in NBA history, 41-year-old LeBron James still torched Atlanta for 31-10-9, passing Kobe Bryant for 30-point Laker double-doubles and proving the 23rd season is still his playground.

LeBron James decided his 41-year-old legs needed rest more than another line in the record book, checking out with 3:43 left and the Los Angeles Lakers up 25. The choice left him at 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds—one board short of becoming the oldest triple-double author in NBA history—in a 141-116 demolition of the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

The near-miss hardly dims the statement. James logged his 61st 30-point double-double as a Laker, eclipsing Kobe Bryant’s franchise mark, and did it on the second night of a back-to-back—something he hadn’t attempted since November after sciatica delayed his 2025-26 debut.

Recovery marathon before the sprint

Coach JJ Redick didn’t expect James to suit up after a disheartening loss in Sacramento 24 hours earlier. James’ gameday routine borders on Olympic:

  • 5 a.m. cold-tub plunge
  • Hyperbaric-chamber session
  • Compression sleeves while gaming EA Sports PGA Tour
  • Prego weight-lift, stretch, activation, Tiger Woods simulator

“I feel it right now,” James said post-game, ice bags strapped to both knees. “I’m ready to get home, get something to eat and call it quits.”

History within reach, then deferred

Karl Malone holds the age record at 40 years 127 days (Nov. 2003). James owns the next 15 slots but hasn’t logged one since Feb. 1, 2025 at Madison Square Garden. Tuesday would have topped them all, yet the Lakers’ 25-point cushion rendered the chase moot.

James slapped a take foul, jogged to the scorer’s table and motioned for Bronny James, 21, to replace him. Father and son shared a chest-bump that encapsulated the night: history acknowledged, business prioritized.

New co-star, same alpha

The near-triple-double arrived 11 months after the Anthony Davis-for-Luka Dončić blockbuster that shifted the Lakers from veteran twin towers to a Slovenian play-making hub. James now toggles between off-ball cutter and second-unit maestro, a compromise that has kept his minutes at 32.8 per game—lowest since his rookie year—and his efficiency sky-high (49-36-78 splits entering Tuesday).

Without Austin Reaves (calf, 2-3 weeks), James has assumed heavier creation duty. Against Atlanta he registered 10 assists against zero turnovers, the 18th such game of his career—most among active players.

What’s next: chase or chill?

The Lakers sit fourth in the West at 26-15, 1.5 games behind Denver. James’ per-game averages (24.3 PPG, 8.1 APG, 7.2 RPG) mirror his age-33 line, but load-management nights remain inevitable. The triple-double record is inevitable too—just not Tuesday.

“I would never disrespect the basketball gods,” James said. “Every time I hit the floor I’m trying to set the example.”

Example set: 41 looks 31, the Lakers look lethal, and the oldest triple-double ever is simply a matter of time.
