Laura Dave’s sequel to her bestselling novel The Last Thing He Told Me is here, offering fans a deeper dive into the lives of Hannah and Owen. Discover what’s next for the beloved characters and the creative journey behind the book.
Fans of The Last Thing He Told Me have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the lives of Hannah Hall and Owen Michaels. Laura Dave’s sequel, The First Time I Saw Him, is now available, promising to answer the burning questions left by the first book’s cliffhanger ending.
The Journey from Standalone to Sequel
Initially, Dave envisioned The Last Thing He Told Me as a standalone novel. However, the overwhelming response from readers and the success of the book, which spent 65 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, prompted her to reconsider. “After the book came out, I started getting so many questions, people saying, ‘Well, what happens next?’ I had really imagined it as a standalone book, but I was surprised that I had an answer to what happened,” Dave shared in an interview with the Associated Press.
The sequel, The First Time I Saw Him, picks up after the events of the first book but also delves into the past, offering readers a more comprehensive understanding of Hannah and Owen’s love story. “If the first (book) is asking the question, what are we willing to do for the people we love? I think the second book is asking, what are we willing to do to be forgiven? And what are willing to for a second chance?” Dave explained.
The TV Adaptation and Beyond
In addition to the sequel, fans can look forward to the second season of the TV adaptation starring Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, which debuts on Apple TV next month. Dave co-created the TV series with her husband, Oscar-winning screenwriter Josh Singer. However, she wasn’t involved in writing Season 2 as she was busy penning the novel.
The TV adaptation has been a significant success, further cementing the story’s place in popular culture. Dave shared a heartwarming anecdote about the impact of her book: “I was on a plane when we were shooting the first season of the show. We all had ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ crew hats. I was walking down the aisle on the plane, and there was this young mom holding a beautiful baby boy, and she stopped me and said, ‘Is this like the book ‘The Last Thing He Told Me?’ And I said yes. I didn’t say I was the author. She said, ‘Oh, this is Owen. I named him after Owen. I love the name Owen that I saw in the book, do you remember Owen?’ I broke down.”
The Creative Process and Future Projects
Dave’s writing process is deeply personal and collaborative. She described her dynamic with her husband, Josh Singer, as a blend of different approaches. “We’re so different in our process. He’ll show me things immediately while he’s writing them. He will show me new scenes because especially with screenwriting, and certainly with TV writing, there’s so much collaboration. So, you do it that way. I’m more like, I have to sort of be in my hole and get to the end and then get feedback. He’s my best reader and my first reader. I love talking about story with him and character. I’m a really big fan of his writing. I don’t know that I could be married to a writer if I didn’t feel like they’re the best writer around, and that’s how I feel about him.”
Looking ahead, Dave and Singer are writing the screenplay for The Night We Lost Him for Netflix. Dave also has plans for her next two books, one of which she has already started.
Why This Matters
The release of The First Time I Saw Him is not just another sequel; it’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the deep connection between authors and their readers. Dave’s ability to weave suspense and hope into her narratives has resonated with millions, making her work a cultural phenomenon. The sequel promises to deliver the same emotional depth and intrigue that made the first book a bestseller, while also exploring new themes of forgiveness and second chances.
For fans of The Last Thing He Told Me, this sequel is a must-read. It offers a chance to revisit beloved characters and delve deeper into their stories, all while enjoying Dave’s signature blend of suspense and heart. As the TV adaptation continues to captivate audiences, the book series is poised to become a lasting part of contemporary literature.
