After three rounds of cooking, Chef Cesar Murillo defeated Chef Katianna Hong to return to Top Chef season 22.
How did the Last Chance Kitchen finale challenges go?
Following his elimination from the May 8 episode of Top Chef, Cesar came to Last Chance Kitchen to face off with Katianna, who was actually the sixth chef eliminated this season. To get to the final face off, Katianna already had three wins under her belt. She previously defeated Chef Kat Turner, Chef Henry Lu and Chef Paula Endara to advance to the finale against Cesar.
Cesar beat Katianna in the first round, which was a Mission: Impossible-themed challenge where the two chefs were not allowed to touch their food and instead had to instruct a chef of their choosing how to prepare the dish. Cesar chose Chef Corwin Hemming as his right-hand man, and Katianna chose Kat as her right-hand woman. Ultimately, Cesar and Corwin were victorious.
But then, host and judge Tom Colicchio revealed that this was the finale, and it would be best two out of three.
The second challenge, which was a must-win for Katianna, tasked the two chefs with making a one-bite dish that Colicchio would be judging blindfolded, so he would not know which chef cooked which bite.
After the second challenge, it was on to the third challenge because Katianna won. The third challenge involved making anything they wanted, which Katianna didn’t love because she wanted some kind of constraints within which to design her dish.
For their final chance to return to the competition, Cesar made zucchini spirals with a tomatillo salsa, while Katianna made a potato and cauliflower soup.
Ultimately, Colicchio decided that Cesar would be returning to Top Chef — he was the chef was just eliminated, so he won’t have been gone for long.
