King Charles III reflects on cancer diagnosis and treatment

King Charles III is opening up about his cancer diagnosis and treatment, acknowledging that the experience can be “daunting and at times frightening” for both patients and their loved ones.

Charles and Queen Camilla, joined by Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday to honor community-based initiatives that raise cancer awareness and support those living with the disease.

In a statement, Charles commented on the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis, noting, “Each diagnosis, each new case, will be a daunting and at times frightening experience for those individuals and their loved ones.”

“But as one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity,” he continued. “It has certainly given me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work undertaken by the remarkable organisations and individuals gathered here this evening, many of whom I have known, visited and supported over the years. And it has reinforced what I have long observed during these visits — that the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”

Charles also praised the compassionate support provided by health care organizations, noting how they offer not only critical research and care but also safe, understanding spaces for patients and their families.

“What strikes us repeatedly is the profound impact of human connection — whether in the careful explanation from a specialist nurse, the hand held by a hospice volunteer, or the shared experience in a support group,” he stated. “These moments of kinship create what I might call a ‘community of care,’ one that sustains patients through the most difficult of times.”

He went on to thank researchers, health care workers, volunteers and fundraisers, commending their dedication to advancing cancer care and adding that they have “my whole family’s deepest admiration and gratitude.”

“Your commitment to early diagnosis, evermore successful therapies and truly holistic care represents the very best our country can offer,” he stated.

Charles’ cancer diagnosis was announced by Buckingham Palace in February 2024, shortly after he received treatment for benign prostate enlargement.

The palace did not disclose the type or stage of Charles’ cancer, nor the specifics of his treatment plan. After several weeks away from the public eye, Charles made his first royal appearance since the diagnosis with a visit to a cancer treatment center on April 30, 2024.

The king was briefly hospitalized last month due to “temporary side effects” from what the palace described as “scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer.”
