King Charles and Queen Camilla are wishing Princess Charlotte a very happy 10th birthday. The young royal, who turned 10 on Friday, May 2, got a kind message from the King and Queen, who posted Charlotte’s birthday portrait on social media in honor of the occasion.
In a post shared to the Royal Family’s official X account and Instagram Stories, King Charles and Queen Camilla wrote, “Happy Birthday to Princess Charlotte! 🎂🎉” above a photo of a smiling Charlotte taken by her mother, Kate Middleton.
Kate captured the image on her iPhone, marking a first for the birthday portraits of Kate and Prince William’s three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Kate took the photo of Charlotte earlier this year while visiting Cumbria in the northwest of England, per SkyNews. In the picture, Charlotte grins outside while sporting hiking gear against a wilderness landscape.

The birthday well wishes from King Charles and Queen Camilla hint at their bond with the young princess. Last summer, Princess Charlotte and the King even appeared to wear lookalike friendship bracelets in July 2024.
Charlotte wore two pink and blue string bracelets while attending Wimbledon with her aunt Pippa Middleton and mom Kate on July 14, while the King was seen wearing a similar style just days later on July 17, when he left the State Opening of Parliament with a red and yellow string bracelet on his wrist.

King Charles also sent a subtle nod to his grandchildren through his accessories by wearing a pink and blue dinosaur tie to church in January 2023, which was “thought to have been a Christmas gift from one of his grandchildren,” according to the Daily Mail. The King wore the tie again when he made his return to public-facing duties in April 2024 after the palace announced his cancer diagnosis in February 2024.
Charlotte also showed her special connection to the King at his Coronation Procession in 2023, when she and siblings George and Louis rode in the first horse-drawn carriage behind the Gold State Coach carrying the newly crowned King and Queen. After the parade, she and her family joined her grandfather on the Buckingham Palace balcony. Charlotte waved to well-wishers from the balcony and watched the flypast.
Charlotte and the King have shared a special link since the 2015 birth of the princess, whose name is the female version of his. During a public outing shortly after Charlotte was born, the King said he had been “hoping for a granddaughter — someone to look after me when I am very old.”
He also revealed that Charlotte was “much easier on mum than Prince George,” her older brother, in her sleeping habits.

King Charles reflected on becoming a first-time grandfather in 2013 after the birth of George. He told The Telegraph at the time, “It’s a different part of your life.”
He added, “The great thing is to encourage them, show them things to take their interest. My grandmother did that; she was wonderful. It is very important to create a bond when they are very young.”
