If the theme for next year’s Met Gala is “main character in a murder mystery,” then consider Kendall Jenner ready. The model stepped out for last night’s after-parties in a sleek black vintage Mugler look and tilted hat, looking like either a fabulous divorcée, an extra from Clue, or Wednesday Addams’ more fashionable cousin. Whatever you want to call it, it’s undeniably chic.
Jenner dug into the archives for this look, specifically Manfred Thierry Mugler’s fall/winter 1999-2000 “La Vie en Rose” collection, according to the brand. The ensemble consists of a black wool crêpe faille suit and peplum jacket with blush satin lining. But of course the spotlight was the headpiece, which covered her eyes in such a dramatic way as to elevate her serve to another level. And paired with her glossy loose curls? The spirit of Jessica Rabbit and Carmen San Diego were in the glam room when Jenner was getting ready. (Should we call Rian Johnson up for a Met Gala-themed Knives Out film?)
Earlier in the night, Jenner dressed for the Met Gala’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme in a menswear-inspired two-piece look by designer Torishéju Dumi, and styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. Her tailored jacket and matching fishtail skirt were inspired by singer Gladys Bentley and the women of the Harlem Renaissance, according to Dumi.
Modeling and working in fashion has helped Jenner open up, she says. She told Vogue last year, “I remember being that awkward kid at the beginning of my modeling career and thinking to myself, I’m going to come out of this. It’s such a social job—working with photographers and stylists and creative directors all day long—and that’s how things started to click for me.”
This year marks Jenner’s 11th Met Gala in a row. We can’t wait to see what she has planned for her 12th.
