The ‘Tennessee Williams Episode’: Kelly Bishop Unpacks Emily Gilmore’s Most Unhinged Moment

Kelly Bishop, the iconic actress behind Emily Gilmore on ‘Gilmore Girls,’ recently revealed her favorite episode: a shocking season four moment where Emily completely unravels, showcasing a “bizarre” and “out of character” side that Bishop herself found delightful to play.

For fans of the beloved series ‘Gilmore Girls,’ the character of Emily Gilmore stands as a formidable figure: elegant, demanding, and impeccably composed. Yet, even the most proper matriarch can have her breaking points. Kelly Bishop, the acclaimed actress who brought Emily to life, recently opened up about her favorite episode, a season four gem that saw her character famously unravel in a way that resonated deeply with both Bishop and the show’s ardent fanbase.

In an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary, Bishop shared insights into her time on the original series, which aired for seven seasons until 2007. She singled out a particularly memorable installment, “The Reigning Lorelai” (Season 4, Episode 16), as her personal favorite. This episode depicts a dramatic shift in Emily’s demeanor, a departure from her usual uptight persona that Bishop found “bizarre” and utterly enjoyable to perform.

Emily’s Epic Breakdown: The ‘Tennessee Williams Episode’

The catalyst for Emily’s unprecedented unraveling in “The Reigning Lorelai” is a double whammy of revelations. First, she discovers that her husband, Richard Gilmore (Edward Herrmann), had annual lunches with his ex-fiancée, Pennilyn Lott (Linda Gehringer), a secret kept for decades. This initial shock is compounded by the death of Richard’s unkind mother, Lorelai “Trix” (Marion Ross). While going through Trix’s belongings, Emily unearths a letter Trix had written to Richard the night before his wedding, explicitly begging him not to marry Emily.

This betrayal from both husband and mother-in-law pushes Emily past her breaking point. Bishop vividly recalled the experience: “The one [episode] that was so out of character for Emily was the one I call ‘the Tennessee Williams episode’ for my character, when she finds out that her husband’s mother has died and, going through her things, she comes across a letter that her mother-in-law had written to her husband the night before the wedding, begging him not to marry me,” Bishop explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “That just set me off in some other place where suddenly I’m wearing caftans and drinking in the day, and that’s why I called it that, because it was so out of character for Emily. She completely lost it and I enjoyed that one so much because it was so bizarre.”

During this episode, fans witnessed Emily in a state rarely seen:

  • She announces her refusal to plan Trix’s wake.
  • She is seen smoking cigarettes.
  • She consumes alcohol during the daytime.
  • She lounges in caftans, abandoning her typically polished attire.

This drastic change in behavior made the episode a standout for its raw depiction of a character usually so tightly wound. It offered a moment of clarity for the audience, revealing a vulnerable side beneath the composed exterior.

The Enduring Appeal of Emily Gilmore

Bishop’s appreciation for Emily’s complexity extends beyond this single episode. In an October 2020 interview with TODAY, she described Emily as “a piece of work” with a “no nonsense” attitude. She emphasized that Emily is “smart” and understands “current things,” but her interactions with her free-spirited daughter, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), often lead to clashes due to a fundamental difference in their “value system.”

“There’s a certain value system that she expects people to live by, particularly her daughter,” Bishop stated to TODAY, highlighting the source of much of the show’s central conflict and humor.

The 81-year-old actress also shared what she loved most about portraying Emily. Beyond the character’s rich inner life, Bishop adored Emily’s expensive clothing and, significantly, “her attitude.” She found joy in embodying a character who was “difficult and demanding and hard to please, as far as Lorelai was concerned.” This blend of sophistication, rigidity, and underlying vulnerability made Emily Gilmore one of the most complex and beloved figures in television history.

Emily’s Continued Evolution in ‘A Year in the Life’

Kelly Bishop reprised her role as Emily in the 2016 Netflix revival mini-series, ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.’ In the revival, the theme of Emily’s unraveling in the face of loss echoes once more, this time following the death of her husband, Richard. Viewers watched as Emily navigated her grief by purging the Gilmore house of frivolities and adopting a more casual style, even wearing jeans and a t-shirt – another stark departure from her established character.

This continuation of Emily’s emotional journey further cemented her status as a character who, despite her initial appearance of being unchanging, was capable of profound growth and surprising transformations. Bishop’s portrayal of these complex layers, from the impeccably proper matriarch to the grieving widow shedding her pretenses, is a testament to her talent and the depth she brought to Emily Gilmore.
