Kelley Mack’s death came as a surprise to some of the people closest to her, despite her cancer diagnosis.
A representative for Mack tells PEOPLE that they were “totally surprised” by her death on Aug. 2 as she had been auditioning for roles up until June.
“We had no idea the turn it took and it was very unexpected,” the representative adds.

Mack died at age 33 after being diagnosed with glioma of the central nervous system, according to her obituary.
The Walking Dead actress’ death was also announced in a post on her Instagram account.
“It is with indelible sadness that we are announcing the passing of our dear Kelley. Such a bright, fervent light has transitioned to the beyond, where we all eventually must go,” a statement read alongside a single photo of the actress.
Both the Instagram post and her obituary stated that Mack “passed [away] peacefully,” surrounded by family.
“Kelley has already come to many of her loved ones in the form of various butterflies 🦋 ❤️. She will be missed by so many to depths that words cannot express,” the statement continued.
Her life celebration is set for Aug. 16 in Ohio.

Mack had 35 credits as an actress and five as a producer.
She joined the cast of The Walking Dead as Addy in season 9. The series ran for 11 seasons, beginning in 2010 until its final episode in 2022.
Additionally, she took on the role Penelope Jacobs in season 8 of Chicago Med and was cast on FOX’s 9-1-1. She also portrayed Alice in Broadcast Signal Intrusion and Wilda in the recently released Delicate Arch.
She also starred in commercials with Dr. Pepper, Ross stores, Dairy Queen and Chick-fil-a. Mack is currently featured in a Rakuten commercial with her mom, Kristen.
Though Mack won several awards for her work in the entertainment industry, she was known for “her warmth, creativity, and unwavering support for those around her,” her obituary stated.

“She cherished time with her family and friends, finding joy in collaboration and storytelling,” the obituary continued.
Mack will posthumously appear as Ricky in the yet-be-released Universal.
