Katie Meyer Lawsuit Resolved: Stanford Settles, Honors Legacy with New Initiatives

The wrongful death lawsuit between Stanford University and the family of soccer star Katie Meyer has been resolved, ending a contentious legal battle and paving the way for the university to honor her legacy with new mental health initiatives and a retired jersey number.

The long and painful legal chapter between Stanford University and the parents of Katie Meyer has officially closed. In a joint statement released Monday, Jan. 26, both parties announced the resolution of the wrongful death lawsuit that gripped the sports world and raised critical questions about the well-being of student-athletes. The settlement brings an end to a case that was scheduled to go to trial later this year and instead shifts focus to honoring Meyer’s legacy and improving support systems for students.

Meyer, a standout goalkeeper who led the Stanford women’s soccer team to a national championship in 2019, died by suicide on March 1, 2022, at the age of 22. Her parents filed the lawsuit in November 2022, alleging the university was responsible for their daughter’s death due to its mishandling of a disciplinary matter stemming from an incident where Meyer allegedly spilled coffee on a Stanford football player.

“Stanford and the family of Katie Meyer are pleased to have reached a resolution in the lawsuit that was filed against the university following Katie’s tragic death in 2022,’’ the university’s statement read. “To honor Katie, Stanford will collaborate with Katie’s family to launch an initiative focused on the mental health and well-being of student-athletes at the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance.”

As part of the resolution, Stanford Athletics will establish the Katie Meyer Leadership Award to be given to an exceptional Stanford student-athlete each year. Furthermore, the university confirmed it would adopt the principles of Katie Meyer’s Law, a California bill signed into law in September 2024 that requires public colleges to allow students to have an adviser when facing disciplinary action. The jersey number Meyer wore, #19, will also be retired in her honor.

The Coffee Incident That Sparked a Lawsuit

At the heart of the legal dispute was a disciplinary action Meyer was facing at the time of her death. According to court documents, the incident occurred in August 2021 when Meyer was riding her bike and allegedly spilled coffee on a Stanford football player. The school alleged the unnamed player suffered burns on his back that required medical attention.

The situation grew more complex when the football player was accused of having kissed one of Meyer’s teammates without consent. Meyer’s father, Steve, previously told USA TODAY Sports that the disciplinary issue arose from his daughter defending a teammate. The Meyers argued that Stanford’s opaque disciplinary process caused their daughter acute stress, as they claim they were not informed of the matter and that it threatened her ability to graduate on time.

A Legacy Forged in Goal

Before the legal battle, Katie Meyer’s legacy was defined by her heroics on the soccer field. A goaltender, she was a captain of the Stanford team in her senior year. However, her most iconic moment came during her sophomore season in the 2019 NCAA women’s soccer championship.

With the game against North Carolina deadlocked at 0-0 after two overtimes, the match went to penalty kicks. Meyer emerged as the star of the shootout, making two crucial saves to help Stanford secure a 5-4 victory and the national title. Her performance in the semifinal against UCLA was equally clutch, where she saved a penalty kick that propelled Stanford to a 4-1 win. These cemented her status as a beloved figure on campus and beyond.

A Matter of Dispute and a Law Born from Tragedy

The legal proceedings between the Meyers and Stanford grew increasingly contentious. The university claimed that Meyer’s parents allowed key information to be destroyed, arguing that this evidence was needed to demonstrate the university was not to blame for Meyer’s state of mind. The Meyers’ attorneys strongly denied these allegations, calling them a smear campaign against their daughter.

Out of this tragedy, a powerful movement for change was born. The Meyers founded Katie’s Save, a non-profit dedicated to advocating for student rights in disciplinary processes. Their efforts led to the passage of Katie Meyer’s Law in California, which now mandates that public colleges provide students with an adviser during disciplinary hearings. The joint statement confirms Stanford will now adopt these principles, marking a significant shift in its own Office of Community Standards process.

“While Katie’s passing remains devastating and tragic, the memory of her accomplishments and the uplifting influence she had on those who knew her lives on,” the university concluded. “Stanford and the Meyer family believe that working together on these initiatives will both honor Katie’s indelible legacy and help current and future students in meaningful ways.”
